I'm a long-time rider. I'm probably going on about 40 years. Yea, I'm an old geezer. Anyway, I come from a dirt bike background. I'm guessing that a lot of folks do since that's all you can ride before you can ride on the road. Fast forward to 1981. I got married started a family. I kept riding my Yamaha XT 250 for a few years. My priorities change (babies are introduced) and motorcycling goes on the back burner for a few years.

About 12 years ago I start commuting to Boise. And I figured I can save some wear and tear on my cages by pursuing a motorcycle. I find an old beat up '81 Goldwing. And of course I find nirvana (no not the band!) again. I'm riding this Wing the whole year round. I looked like the Michelin Man in the winter! Over time I have the burning desire to do some touring. And the truth is the old Wing really wasn't up to it. It would run a little over 5K at 65mph and it sounded like the motor was ready to blow apart. So I headed into Canyon Honda's dealership to look for a newer Goldwing.

I have no intention of buying a new Wing so I check out the few used ones the had outside. I took a couple for a ride and sure enough they are a lot nicer than my old 1100 Interstate. The salesman told me I might be interested in the used '97 ST1100 they just got on trade. First thing I said was, "I don't want a stinkin' crouch-rocket." The Salesman explained that it was more of a touring bike than a sport bike. I was thinking, "yea, right." But to humor the guy I took it for a spin.

As I eased onto a side road I laid on the throttle and holy crap, this thing had some get up and go! The V4 purred like a kitten and was as smooth as silk at cruising speed and beyond. Now this was a touring bike with attitude! I had to have it. But, I knew there was no way my wife would go for it. So, I pursued all the financing behind her back. I had never done anything like this in all our years of marriage. I'll make a short story out of this by saying, "it got really, really ugly!" I've never seen her so mad in our entire marriage. And I've never seen that frenzy since then, thank God! And the Honda ST1100 enters into my life.
To be continued.....

SaddleSore 1000 ride on my Multistrada.

Getting to bed last night at 5:30pm didn't work out as well as I hoped. I was still amped out from work and my mind just would not turn off. After 6 hours of trying and maybe getting 2-3 hours of quality sleep, I gave up trying, dressed up for my ride, kissed Linda good night, and was out of the apt. by midnight. It was pretty chilly, and even when I think I'm overdressed for a ride, I appreciate every last fiber of every layer I put on because my ride started out cold and only got colder. The first 500 miles from Simi Valley to Redding were misery in a bottle.

Sensory deprivation can be fun when played the right way, but when traveling through the Central Valley in pitch darkness with nothing but the hum of the motor and your sense of smell working, it was torture. Getting back to that sense of smell...it's beyond my comprehension that people actually grow and consume food from the valley after what my nose was put through. Smells of rotten eggs, fertilizer, road kill, petroleum, cow shit, brake pads and rubber kept hitting me. I've driven that route a hundred times, normally in my car with the air conditioning running and the windows closed, so I was isolated from these smells until last night. No windshield to protect me. No daylight to distract me. Thanks to my normal circadian rhythm and my lack of sleep (and the utterly straight road), I was fatigued like nothing else. Usually the sun is enough to wake me up. I saw it rise in Sacramento at around 5 am, but desperately wanted a bed to lie down on. It wasn't until Redding, where the roads got interesting, that I caught my second wind.

I had been through Redding many times, usually on my way to a renowned hang gliding spot...Hat Creek Rim. I was familiar with the first 60 miles of the 299 and it brought back many fond memories of camping at the Rim. Little did I know what magnificent vistas I missed right behind the Hat Creek Rim launch site...all the way to Boise. The 299 snakes through red rock ravines, meandered along full flowing streams and rivers, took me to some spectacular summits and valleys. Riding through this part of California gave me the same rush as launching off a 4000 ft. cliff. And the scenery continued through Oregon. Sorry, no pics.

A few things stood out in Oregon to me...the breathtaking greenery, the old rustic barns and corrals, and the ridiculously low speed limit. Seriously, 55 mph on a road with a 10 mile long straightaway? My Ducati has trouble at 55 without a little clutch play. Those are parking lot speeds! And since it was my first time traveling through Oregon, I had no idea how strictly the roads were patrolled. So, I picked a quick moving SUV and shadowed its speed (75 mph or so) and stayed far enough back to give me time to slow if a state trooper did appear. I saw one trooper the entire time. Better safe than strafing a corner at 90 mph and risk losing my license/the Duc/ and my freedom. Slow and steady was the theme of the day. Just as well, because the views were breathtaking. Literally inches away from the ocean-sized lake (Lake Albert). Goose Lake and the small town of Lakeview were also gorgeous. There seems to be two Oregons...the one with trees and the one with desert scrub. I preferred the one with trees, but the deer warning signs kept me from completely letting my mind go. I didn't see any deer, but came within 2mm of hitting a chipmunk. At least they won’t kill you if you hit them. Civilization was a few hundred miles apart in this area. Aside from the car I was shadowing, I didn't really see much else. Maybe 20 cars the entire 300 or so miles I was in Oregon (not counting the small towns that scatter the area). I hit about 10 minutes of rain outside of Burns. Just enough to chill me and soak the bugs that were splattered on my face shield.

With Idaho came civilization and the 84 freeway. It was a big departure from the little 2-lane roads I had been on for the majority of the trip. But it was welcome as I had only 50 more miles before reaching Boise. I met up with a group of online friends from the Boise Riders.Net web site. It was at a Krispy Kreme in Meridian. They nearly shit when they learned I had just ridden up from Los Angeles, but they couldn't deny that my helmet hair was 1,000 miles tweaked. I chatted with a few and left around 8 PM. I was then treated to a hot meal by my mother-in-law. Ham, broccoli salad, twice baked potatoes, bread, and chocolate pudding for desert.

I'm sore, but loving it. I may have to do that ride again.

P.S. Thanks to Brandon for signing my witness form!

Total distance: 1,069 miles
Total time: about 17 hours
Total bugs killed: 3,510

I decided to take up riding this summer. I’m really excited to get started. I found a good deal on a 2005 Suzuki M50 Boulevard. Now I need a helmet. I have a big head and I don’t mean I know it all, just its big, a size 8 hat. I have been shopping around and I haven’t found much I can try on. Carl’s Cycle and Cycle Gear will order one for me but then I have to wait. Then if it’s too small or it doesn’t fit right I’m back to ordering another one. Right now I have a XXL Speed and Strength SS1000 Call to Arms helmet on order from Cycle Gear. I have my doubts about this one fitting as all the XXL helmets I have tried on so far haven’t even fit over the top of my head. This was the biggest one Speed and Strength made. Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated.

Masters of the Mountain Race weekend 1 - East Course in Tooele,Utah

My first race was in the Novice GTU (600cc and smaller for inline 4s). I started in 12th position and had a not so good start. I dropped back a few positions before turn 1. Once I finally got around the green Kawasaki (#716), I made my way back to 11th position. On lap 6 I missed a shift between Tooele and Clubhouse corner. Richard (746) passed me on the outside. At this point I was like, hell no you didn't just pass me. I caught back up with Richard on Windup (the last left hand corner) and stayed on his back tire until Windup on the final lap (7). I took a tighter inside line, and got a better drive out of Windup to beat him by 1/10th of a second on the start/finish line.

Now all this was good, but I was now going too fast, and past my brake marker for turn 1. Needless to say I ended up testing out the gravel trap on turn 1. I kept the bike on 2 wheels and then headed out for the cool down lap. All in all it was a fun race, with consistent 1:53 lap times (once I got around that damn kawi).

My second race was the Novice GTO (1000cc and smaller inline 4s). I started in 8th position and finished in 10th.

Once again my start wasn't the best, but I was following Jen Titus around the track. On the second lap she braked harder than usual into the Attitudes which slowed me down for a couple of corners. As we came into Windup she went a little wide. It looked like she was going to overtake Shane (991), only she lowsided. I looked away so I wouldn't take her out but after her crash my pace dropped off to 1:56. As a provisional novice if we crash we lose our license, and must retake NRC and then wear those ghey pink jerseys for 2 more race weekends.

Overall I have 20 points (11th place) in the GTU series and 21 (10th) points in the GTO series. One more race weekend and the ghey pink jersey will be gone. I'm looking forward to my favorite track configuration in May, the West track.

Other Idaho racers did a good job. Whipple had one of the best starts in the Twins class. He pulled away, but was quickly reeled in by Mr Smooth Shane Turpin. Brandal, Mark, Nate, Tommy and his son, Nate, Jenny (sorry about your 2 crashes - hope the bike is ready in 2 weeks), Tyler all did good.

We were even blessed by Jason DiSalvo running on a borrowed gsxr and he was turning in some fast 1:35 laps.

Here are some practice/race pictures taken by Mr. Whipple - thanks for the good photos and one is from Stephen Clark another Idaho guy racing in the endurance race.

A big thanks to Bailey for helping in the pits, it's much appreciated and thanks to Don for letting me use the trailer again!!! :hail:

Well, yesterday was a day I never really looked forward too: I sold my 2002 CBR600F4i (aka The Mighty).

I had decided to sell the bike even before losing my job in March so it wasn't the end of the world for me but it still sucks to see your first bike (and one that is still so nice) go.
I only rode it TWICE last year on the track and not at all on the street because I've been commuting on my SM610. It just didn't make sense to have a bike sitting around when someone could be getting some good use out of it.

I sold it to a pretty nice guy named Travis and I told him about the site and about our group rides so its pretty likely that I'll at least get to ride WITH my old bike from time to time.

As a weird twist, Travis called this morning to ask if I had any idea why the headlights wouldn't be working. I have no clue. I never had an issue with it the whole time I owned it so I was quite surprised. If he isn't able to find the issue today, I told him to call me up and I'll take a look at it. I want someone to be RIDING the bike, not letting it sit around and I certainly don't want something I sold to be in need of repair.

On October 6, 2007 I was in a small motorcycle accident that resulted in me spending a few hours in the ER and causing some serious cosmetic damage to my bike.

I still have a constant pain in my shoulder and the bruising on my side has subsided quite a bit but it's still there. I also lost some of my feeling in that side. If someone rubs their fingers across the affected area I don't feel it. My Doctor hopes that the feeling will completely return but did warn me that I might go the rest of my life without complete feeling in that area. Oh well. This is one of the risks of my hobby and the way I ride. I hope to die in one of two ways. On my motorcycle or helping someone. If I'm lucky enough it'll be both. :D

The really sad part is the damage that was caused to the bike. I had just gotten it a month ago and had made only one payment. I remember looking at, no drooling over, this bike at Snake River Yamaha the night of our 2007 Ride for the Red Rally. I felt like a child in a toy store staring at the newest GI Joe toy. I needed that toy. If I didn't get it I would just die. So I go to my Mommy, I mean Wife, and sheepishly ask if I can get this new toy. "If we can afford it." she replies. Holy Shit...She said YES!!! I started talking to the salesman and traded in my 1997 Suzuki GSX-R 750 and rode my new toy, a 2007 Suzuki Hayabusa, home. On the ride home I couldn't help but test it's claim to fame. "The fastest production motorcycle available." I was able to get it to 70 going down fairview with barely a twist of the wrist. The front wheel came off the ground as if it was the most natural position for it. To say I loved this bike is an understatement. It's lines were perfect, smooth and shapely like a woman. It's color was a beautiful Cherry Red. And it purred like a Kitten that was laying in the warm summer sun.

You, the reader may think that it's the speed that was what got me into trouble but you would be wrong. Yes I was going fast that day. I had gotten it to 160 mph at one point. But the reason for the accident was not it's speed. That day a bunch of us from Boise Valley Riders went up to cascade and back again. Dan, a fellow Busa owner, and I decided that we wanted to have some fun so we rode out ahead. At the time of the accident he was about 3 or 4 seconds ahead of me. We came upon a set of rail road tracks and then a turn to the right. We slowed down to about 30 - 35 and he crosses the tracks and makes the turn without incident. I on the other hand was not so lucky. As I cross the tracks my rear end becomes airborne. Unfortunately, it also shifted to the side a bit. So when it came down it introduced a very bad wobble to the bike. If I was on a straight road this wouldn't have been that big a deal. I would have been able to get it back under control without any incident. But, alas it was not a straight road. I had that right turn I had to deal with coming up. I was not going be able to get the wobble under control AND make the turn in time. The last memory I have of riding that bike was trying to aim it into the up coming ditch in such a way as to avoid the trees. I woke up next to the bike to an intense pain in right side. I felt restricted and if I didn't get my jacket and vest off I was going to suffocate. So I stood up and while screaming in pain I ripped off my jacket and vest. Thinking "Ah much better" I collapsed with the comforting knowledge that Dan was just up ahead and he would notice that I was gone and head back my way to find me. Yep, I hear his bike coming...and going. What the HELL!!! He just passed me. Well that's okay I guess he'll find me. As I lay there a couple cars pass me by. I really hated the people of the world at that moment. I'm staring into this guys eyes who is staring right back at me and he just keeps on driving. Finally, a good Samaritan stops and asks me if I'm okay. I couldn't help but laugh and say "Nope". He calls 911 and I ask him to make sure my bike is turned off. Then another guy stops who apparently has experience in first aid and he does a quick check of my side and says I probably have a broken rib and after finding out that I had stood up to remove my jacket and vest informed me that that was not the wisest thing to do. Oh well it's done.

Then I hear lots of loud thundering pipes. The sweetest sound I've ever heard. My BVR family has arrived and all will be well. Rob took care of informing my wife of the accident and assured her that I was okay. He also was responsible for saving my chaps. The EMT's wanted to cut them off and he and I both were very much against it. They were able to get them off without any cutting. I really didn't want to have to buy a new set of chaps. They aren't cheap you know. :D I then hear my bike starting up and I was so happy to hear my baby purring. They moved it to a safe location where Wes would come and pick it up with his trailer later on. As the Ambulance pulls away I knew that not only was I going to be taken care of but so was my bike.

When I get to the hospital they do all kinds of checks and tests. They happily inform me that I have no broken bones nor any internal bleeding. That the swelling in my side was not a damaged kidney but just a very large welt. Jodie arrives with my Son, Jacob, and are roommate, Chery. I can see the huge relieve as Jodie walks into the room and sees me alert and smiling. She then informs me that I have a bunch of bikers out in the lobby wondering how I'm doing. Picture that if you will. A dozen or so bikers in full leather waiting out in the lobby. Troy was even there and he wasn't even on the ride with us. How the hell did he find out? No matter. I am touched and thankful for all of them being there. At some point Dan and Preston come in and Dan tells me the bike is repairable and that he and I should be able to do it ourselves. Woot, one worry taken care of. I haven't lost my new toy.

I go home that day drugged up on pain meds and with a fistful of prescriptions to fill. The next few days are kind of a blur but I remember a visit from my friend Karen who brings me this big ass cookie. That cookie was good. I also remember a lot of pain but was comforted because I had people checking up on me a lot to make sure I was okay. Friends are a great and wonderful thing to have.

I finally was well enough to get out of bed and the house. I went to visit my Bike and see what was needed to get him back up and running. I almost came to tears seeing him all broken up. The damage didn't really look that bad but the estimate to repair was just above the 6k mark.

Later I decided that the bike I had had died. The bike needed to be reborn. It needed to become MY bike. Not Suzuki's bike that I happened to own. It was even going to get a new name. No longer would it be known as "The Busa" or "Zeus". I hadn't decided on the name yet but it needed a new one. As soon as I got the insurance money into my account I started ordering new parts for him. A new custom paint job, new pipes, new accessories. I've even gone as far as getting LEDs for it. When it's done I hope to have a bike that I will be proud to put in shows and if I'm lucky enough to even place in one I'll be happy.

The bikes new name will be Midnight. The moment it was suggested as a vanity plate by Jodie I knew that that was it's new name.

I hope to have Midnight in my garage by the end of March. Below is a list of everything that will be done to the bike.
