I Ride: 2007 GSXR600 blu/blk | clutch cable question???
So I just finished changing the chain on my bike, I put everything back in place and decide to check the run of the new chain while the bike is still on the rear stand. I have the clutch lever completely pulled in, shift into first and my rear wheel begins to spin slowly (but stops after 4-5 revolutions) while still having the clutch completely pulled in. I've sprayed lube on the chain while the bike was in gear on the rear stand just one time a long time ago and I can't remember if the rear wheel grabbed a bit when shifting to first. My question is whether this is normal to get a little grab when shifting into gear or do I need to adjust the clutch cable?? Adjusting the cable at the lever made no difference.

I haven't tried this with my own bike, but it's probably OK if it stops on its own. I think the clutch plates are sticking just a little bit, which causes the wheel to move. If you give it a little gas after the wheel stops (with the clutch disengaged), does the wheel start moving again?

Its normal. Centrifugal force. If the bikes on the stand in Neutral and you give the throttle a twist the rear wheel will spin. As far as the clutch needing adjustment... Not sure Id have to see it. Im sure someone else will answer that question. |

I Ride: 2007 GSXR600 blu/blk | Yes, the wheel rotates after giving it gas with the clutch completely pulled in, and this is after the wheel has stopped turning after shifting to first...and it happens in 2nd gear as well.

What your describing is normal. Adjust the clutch off of the center stand if you need to, but it doesn't sound like you have a problem. If the clutch is "grabbing" with the clutch pulled all the way in and the BIKE ON THE GROUND then you may need to adjust it...

Sounds like the general consensus is that this is not a problem. I once had my lever out of adjustment, and it felt like the bike was trying to get away from me when it was stopped, but that was pretty obvious. Just don't adjust the lever too far, or the clutch might drag while you're moving. I try to make sure there's just a little lash in the lever before the clutch starts disengaging. Because the plates wear down, it will disengage with less lever pull as time goes on, so it may need to be periodically adjusted. Consequently, this means that the fluid level in the reservoir will rise (not fall) for those of us who have hydraulic clutches. I learned this lesson the hard way when I over-filled it and it leaked all over my gas tank. |

If your clutch was out of adjustment one of two things would be happening; 1. If it wants to pull away from you when you are at a stop and in gear. Also Neutral would be difficult to find. You would constantly be skipping over neutral. 2. If when you accelerate the bikes RPMs tach out faster than the rate you are accelerating (clutch slipping). If it engages more towards where the lever is fully extended then you may wanna back the adjustment IN a little to make sure there is no tension on the cable causing the clutch to slip. From what you described id go with door #1. If it pulls or is hard to get in neutral then back the adjustment OUT. Hopefully that made some sense. |
