I Ride: YURMOM | Fork Service.
when was the last time your forks were serviced? forks are not "sealed units" and the oil in there can become contaminated and dirty and decrease the forks internals to do their job properly. unfortunately most people wont notice that their suspension is falling off and getting sloppy because as they ride the oil is progressively getting worse and the rider just automatically adapts and adjusts to the worsening situation without realizing it. theoretically you should have a full on fork service done in the off season and then a dump and fill about halfway through the season. pickup and delivery is available my prices can not be beat by any shop in the valley. my turn around time is approximately 24hrs. a full service includes a thorough inspection and cleaning, new and proper oil viscosity and volume as well as new fork seals, all this for $80. if interested you can hit me up to set up an appointment call or text 208-412-1877 pm me here post here email me at boostisgood@msn.com please no thread jacking and thank you, James Bailey Last edited by BLIZANTHIMUM; 02-02-2010 at 09:45 AM. |

I may need you to seat my seals and adjust my suspension on my forks if my seals don't come in this Monday. I leave Tuesday morning at 6am for Haiti. I would of course have to pay you when I get back though. Unless we get some internet when down there but that will take a while as well. PM me some prices. |

most shops charge 4 hours of shop rate if the forks are on the bike and 3 hours if you bring in just the forks, regardless of how long it actually takes them to do it. "parts" depending on bike and quantity needed can run from $40-$60 on top of the labor. but everything is included in my prices. | |

So you are doing service work now Bailey? Cool! I would think that you have a good knowledge of doing fork seals for all the wheeling that you do. Andrews bike is in my garage and will probably stay here until he gets back from Haiti. If we don't get the new fork seals in tomorrow, I would be interested in having you come by and help me put the FZ1 back together so that it is ready to ride when he gets back. |

I've done a few fork seals on street and dirt. If You need a hand let me know. I won't say anything about someone paying $130+ to do a set of forks. But, I can kick You in the sack and take the extra $ if someone wants to spend that. |

Yerby is supposed to come by and help my strip my bike down to the frame to have it PC'ed. I've got 24k on my bike, so I assume this is probably something that couldn't hurt to have done. I've also got this goofy thing for the rear, can the fluid be changed in that as well?

The rear is rotary damper. http://www.venold.com/tl1000s/articl...ary_damper.htm I have no clue if it's filled w/ nitrogen, oil or pixie dust. I've asked the guys on the TL boards if it can be serviced. You've PM'ed people w/ prices, so $80 a flat rate regardless of the shock, or does it change between bikes?

if you want your rear shock serviced send it to Jason at Corporate Suspesion. UPS ships in one day via ground to SLC which is where he is located. Also this spring I've talked him in to coming up here for a suspension clinic so those who can't make it to the track can learn about this black art.

A guy who used to take his TL to the track setup the suspension for me, and I haven't touched any of the setting since when the bike had around 4k on the odo. 20k later and it still rides good, but like Bailey said, the performance degrades over time and isn't noticeable. I'm still waiting for the TLPlanet guys to let me know if the rear damper is even serviceable.

yes $80 is a flat rate unless you want additional work done like springs swapped out or the friction rings replaced.

I'm assuming you offer this $80 service because it'll cover the needs of most riders. I don't stunt this bike much anymore, haven't taken it to the track once. Most of its life lately has been going on group rides, so unless it needs the friction rings are a maintenance item, I'm fine w/ the standard service. You know anything about that rotary damper? I'm still trying to find out if it has oil or nitrogen inside, but I wasn't sure if Suzuki used them in anything else and if you've ever opened one up. Suzuki designers needed to find creative solutions to make the TL1000S a viable sportbike. V-twin motors are longer from front to rear than standard inline four cylinder motors used in most sportbikes. In order to keep the wheelbase as short as possible engineers separated the rear shock absorber/damper from the spring. The spring was located on the right side of the bike and Suzuki developed and employed a rotary style rear damper that provided its damping characteristics through rotating arms. A similar version was also used on the Suzuki TL1000R. The rear shock was similar to suspension dampers used on Formula One race cars, but didn't adequately address that motorcycles require longer suspension travel. As a result, the rotary damper did not have enough oil to handle the rigors of motorcycle duty and would quickly overheat. The lack of oil volume would also cause the oil to quickly degrade, losing viscosity which added to the problems of inconsistent suspension properties. im doing some more research but from what i can find, i dont want anything to do with that funky ass thing. |

I Ride: 01 TL1000R | Hey, I was drunk and it only happened once...or twice. I think. Its done fine for me, but every TL owner on the board who's ditched it for an Ohlins unit says the factory damper is complete garbage. If I tracked my bike and was more serious, I'd probably ditch it as well. |
