Ok, that just makes no sense to me that the front cylinder would run hotter at the exit. Unless the left side is pulling more exhaust from the right bank. Just don't know. As for the "floating can", I think it might look odd. If the M4 is the one that you are going to run, I would suggest doing the ceramic coat up to the point where it exits the fairings. The stuff that is covered up by fairings (i.e. less cooling air) is the part that will matter. |

The M4 is what I'm running currently. I don't have the option of coating only the parts under the fairings because Bailey is going to fix the dent that I have on the right side, so I'm paying extra to have them coated up to the mufflers to hide his repair. If the dent wasn't there, I'd consider only coating the piping under the fairing, but then again, the exposed pipes get hotter than shit and have burned a few calves in their day, so coating them from inlet to outlet is probably better. Now the burning question...anyone w/ Photoshop skills so we can help me make a decision |

Not me bro...the ladies! My legs don't get close to where the pipes are exposed, so I'm good.

So here are three pics...stock, black frame w/ silver pipes and polished muffler, then black frame w/ black pipes and polished mufflers. He's coating them tomorrow, so please give me your opinions. ![]() ![]() |

That's what I'm leaning towards, but 3 looks good as well. I've already told Bailey to do all silver, but before I posted the pics I got like 3 votes for black pipes to make the mufflers pop. Personally, I'm not that picky really, I just wanted to see what others thought.

So I've decided to do black exhaust and replace my mufflers w/ black CF cans. Getting these fairings http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FAIRI...Q5fAccessories has already been a long time plan, so w/ a black frame and fairings, then silver pipes and polished mufflers would stand out too much. Now I just need to find a decent price on CF M4 mufflers.

K, deleted some posts so I don't keep putting up repeats of the same pics and to clean things up a bit. Here are before and after pics. It was getting too dark and cold by the time I got home, so I'll take the temps tomorrow to see what the heat changes are. Dent repair - Katnip said the dent was a ####h to repair, so I'm content he got it this far. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Headers, midpipes, collector, etc. - Not that I ever saw them before, but I'm happy the rust marks are GONE! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The only problem spot I have is something that looks like bubbling (the 10 o'clock scrape marks are from the chain), which is on the topside of the last pipe after it exits the fairings, so unfortunately it'll be visible. The whole spot measures about the size of a finger digit. I've got a text into Bailey w/ a pic as to how I should go about fixing it, so we'll see. ![]() Bead blasted, dent repaired and all done w/ a turn around of about 3 business days. All in all, it looks so much better w/ the dent and scratches removed, so as long as the temps go down, I'll be a happy man. Last edited by m5james; 03-03-2010 at 08:59 PM. |

Well tomorrow is here, but by the time I got pieces painted and installed, daylight was long gone and the outside temps had dropped. Here are some more pics of just extra crap I did to make it a clean install. The time I had alloted to get everything painted, assembled and temps retested was ruined by the smell of cookies in the oven, so I got hungry and had to do something about it FYI - using petroleum jelly on the slip joints made it go on WAY easier than trying it dry since the ceramic is pretty abrasive.Before/after of the exhaust clamps and spring. Engine paint matches pretty good, but is more shiny. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not the best match w/ the polished cans, but it looks fine next to the frame. Unless I decide to replace the cans w/ CF sleeves and repaint the pipes myself w/ black engine paint, I think silver was still a good choice at the moment. ![]() |

So after fixing my exhaust leak by replacing the rear gasket, I still don't have good news to report. Unfortunately while testing (exhaust leak still present) the low battery light started flashing on me, so I replaced the batteries. Now the readings are all over the highway, I can point at different spots on the pipes coming off the block and see a 200* variance, which I'm assuming it just because I'm measuring at a bend and the temps are higher on the outside portion of the bend. I was looking forward to posting before and after results here and on my TL forums, but replacing the old batteries w/ new has clearly made the unit more sensitive. One thing I have noticed is that my idle actually changed and I had to bump it up a little bit. I did some Google research and discovered that this is actually a side effect of the coating doing it's job by trapping the head inside the pipes and making it flow better, hence the drop in idle RPM's. All I can really say at this point, which you've all seen by the pics, is that Bailey did a great job on repairing my dent (I paid for the additional work) and coating my exhaust system from head to toe. I don't doubt for a minute that the ceramic coating itself is in fact doing it's job, I just wish I had numbers to back it up. The odds of me finding a TL owner w/ the same Cen-Tech laser reader, temp and climate, etc to take before readings again is probably slim to none. For the price and being a true ceramic coating, his prices can't be beat. Last edited by m5james; 03-11-2010 at 10:34 PM. |

Do those pipes have built in cats? Has there ever been an issue w/ baking the coating on and having it affect the cat? The finish looks metallic instead of black, I like it. Whoever does the coating again should do before and after temps since I wasn't able to get it done right. |

Not to thread jack, but I have a complete OEM exhaust that will fit the 06-09 R6. Someone could turn it into a 'race' exhaust by removing the CAT then have bailey give it the high temp coating... Anyone interested? |

03-05 stck r6 headers fit all the way up to 09 R6. Need minor plastic modification to avoid burning tho. Big ugly stock slip is no bueno. Lol, why are we talking about this? OP has a R6??

I Ride: 01 TL1000R | Would the emissions station check for the cat since they started coming installed w/ them after 06, or do they even do visual inspections on bikes? I guess someone could always swap their catted header back on once every couple of years before the emissions test.

That's why I said 'race' exhaust. Like LazyJ's, he had the CAT removed & has straight pipe up to the little cute slipon. He's gonna love that I called it little and cute, which is why I did it.

I Ride: 01 TL1000R | I'm far from a tree hugger w/ 4 vehicles between two people, and two of the vehicle only get around 15mpg using super unleaded. As long as the power stays up, emissions testing keeps vehicle running better by making sure they're properly tuned, which can also be beneficial to gas mileage and our pockets.

I Ride: 01 TL1000R | I agree 100%...we always complain in this society about how nothing gets done till it's too late, yet ID is proposing to keep our air from slowly turning into San Diego smog, and yet some feel threatened by this. I could delete the cats and install 02 simulators tomorrow, but for what...2hp and an exhaust that smells like ass. No thanks, I'll take cleaner air in the long run.

I try to maintain my bike as well, but there are those who simply refuse, can't afford or try old tuning techniques that no longer apply to modern engines...deleting thermostats (which ruins gas mileage), deleting cats (when the ECU is tuned to run w/ them) or x-pipes in exchange for straight pipes (ruining the scavenging affect of the engine and possibly fouling plugs sooner) from cars the require certain amounts of back pressure. Testing keeps things under control, along w/ making sure it was done right. This isn't a negative. Anyways, we're getting off topic on Bailey's thread. GREAT JOB Bailey! back to the other subject, which is opinionated, but if I buy a vehicle, or a bike, that is my worry to keep it taken care of. Not because I want to keep it nice for the "next owner". Most cases when I purchase something like that it is with the intent to drive it till the wheels fall off. As for other states, yes, I know, I have lived in NY which is pretty harsh on the "inspections", Florida, Alaska, and several other places. But for me to go through some of the trouble I have for my older cars, .006 off on one reading and I failed, BS. Anyway, rant off. lol It is still "We, The People, Right?"! |
