tired of paying too much for tire changes?

i know i sure am and im looking to do something about it.
i think that that we(BRN as a whole) should buy a tire changing machine.
and i think this No-Mar scratch proof tire changer is the way to go.
guaranteed not to mar any surface including carbon fiber wheels
http://www.nomartirechanger.com/products/showcase
http://www.nomartirechanger.com/videos/13
http://www.nomar-secure.com/ShoppingCart.asp?
$630 shipped to idaho. for another $60+tax we could get a balancer from harbor freight. so for approximately $700 we could have the whole setup in one spot.
now harbor freight has a tire changer for $60 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=42927 but you gotta remember it is harbor freight quality and IMO it looks like a wheel eating monster.

feel free to chime in with ya's na's or indifferent, but i figured if we could get at least 35 of us members to chip in $20 a piece we could have the $700 quickly and easily. and then said members could have free mounting and balancing for life as long as they stay in the treasure valley.
this machine will belong to the BRN members that chip in. and it will stay in the treasure valley indefinitely.
i have no problem hosting this machine at my place and everyone will have access to it virtually anytime. or you can drop of your wheels or bike and i can do it for you.

alright lets try doing this thing.
my paypal is boostisgood@msn.com
if there is not enough money contributed by March 31, 2010 all funds will be returned to their owners.
if you contribute through paypal make sure you supply your full name as well as your BRN screen name and phone number so i can keep track of who and how much.
minimum contribution of $20 please.
send the money as a "Personal gift" so paypal doesnt get the 3% fee.

I could chip in $20. I am tired of taking mine to shops and getting raped for a tire swap. Then they want to fight with me to get the old ones back.

You could also do track days and get your tires mounted and balanced for free.

Yes but Track days cost money. I am wanting to do the $99 day that would be fun. But still then I would have to get good leathers.

for the $99, you can use their leathers in case you didn't know about that.

And someone to share a ride with. Somewhere to stay and food. When is the next $99 day in Utah anyway?

I think it's a great idea.

Things that would need to be worked out though.

Who would keep it? Who would change people's tires when someone doesn't want to do the change themselves? Who would decide if the changer could go to the track, another persons garage, how long would it be allowed to be borrowed, who would get to decide the answers to these questions...

I change my own, and even invested into a manual tire changer that I still have to bolt down to a board.

It is a good idea, but as others stated, could be several issues that need to be worked out. Good luck though great idea. Does that come with a balancer too?

I purchased a $50 bead breaker from JCWhitney and use tire irons, works excellent! The trick to not destroying your wheels is:
1. good lube (soapy water)
2. slide an empty, flattened juicy juice box (or similar water resistant think paper type material) between your tire iron and the wheel to avoid scuffing the wheel.

Not sure I would trust this method on high end carbon fiber or magnesium wheel. Takes about 5 minutes to remove a tire.

for those who are curious i just called a couple shops and going rates are about 45 bucks for both wheels if you take wheels off and 110 if they take the wheels off.

imho, just buy the rig and charge your first 35 customers $20 for change, then something really reasonable like $10.

I think this is a great idea and if bailey is willing to host it (primarily) and change our tires for free... then I dont see the issue - you let him work on your fork seals - why not let him change your damn tires?

This is not DRAMA - it is very simple - the people on here are just DRAMA -

If bailey is unavailable we could have an alternate home for it - just two or three members who have been on this site for a long time - who are willing to help one another out - that way if bailey is out of town for 3 weeks then the changer can go live with someone else for that time - but this isnt really that damn complicated people stop making it that way

- as for liability.... really? again... you let bailey change forkseals - oil - other mechanical and electrical parts, but you dont think he can swing a tire change?? LMAO - Plus it comes with a video

Thats nice that DON gets his for FREE BUT I AM NOT DON...

Bailey is suggesting a good idea so everyone gets theirs done, virtually for free, too - Maybe bailey is just lonely and wants constant visitors at his house ... begging him to work for free... on our bikes... cuz he loves us all SOOoooOOOOoo MUCH

We live in a sue happy world, so yeah really. Part of the reason it cost too much money to have a shop do this is for insurance, along with time. Trust me it only takes one jackass to ruin it for everyone. There is a huge difference between losing fork oil and having your bead break while on the road. I'm sure most on here haven't had the pleasure of a flat tire on a bike or even how to control it. Let alone if it should happen in a corner. Then you have the scratched/dented rims issue - not saying it would happen or be intentional but ###t happens.

This "liability" is also why we don't get all of the available tire choices that you could purchase in Europe... sue happy people.

Like I said good idea, high liability.

And Bailey you could save money by not getting the balancer. Cycle Queer will balance tires for free which also means you won't have to keep buying wheel weights.

I came VERY close to buying a NoMar Tire Changing system last spring (right before I was laid off).
I've been changing my tires for a few years using their tire changing bar but I had a chance to see the entire system demo'd in person while @ MMP two years ago and was REALLY impressed with how easy and fast it is. At some point, I WILL have one of those machines.

I'm out of the area so I'm out of a group purchase but would actually just purchase one for myself even if I was there. Coordinating with other people to change my tires would be an annoyance.

I honestly think a good option would be for one or two people to just buy one and then charge a nominal fee for changing tires.

I might need your help the 1st time if you're willing to show me. I've gotta remove my old tires, get them powdercoated, then remount the tires. I've got ceramic beads so the wheels will balance themselves.

PLUS medical bills.... and PLUS pain and suffering..... and you tell me thats not greed talking

sue happy ......

as i have said great idea >>>>AGAIN<<<< for a few to go in on it and charge next to nothing to do it ..

. but I think me myself and I think it would be a fight and drama it breaks or what ever else can go wrong ...... THATS MY OPINION AGAIN

carry on with the decoder ring you may all have if this doesnt make sense

im sure r1don will fix it for me ....

There are several people locally that can do this, but unless you happen to be a good friend they won't do it for the same reasons.

And don't forget about that stem change requirement too.

going in as a large group could cause complications. a small group would be better and easier to manage ownership. as we know americans are greedy people. look at the people who go in equally on the lottery but when they win they dont want to split it up equally.

Since you are so obsessed with technicalities Stubbs, what attorney quoted you "thousands" of dollars to create a basic liability waiver? Also since your so obsessed with backing your technicalities with links you should check out www.legalzoom.com so you dont ever get charged "thousands" of dollars for any legal documents. If the waiver is drafted correctly it would protect all parties equally and fairly. I have family members and friends that are layers of all kinds so ive been around a conversation of subject matter once or twice..

I think the tire machine is a good idea for 2 maybe 3 people to buy and charge 10-15 bucks to do tires until the original investors have broken even then do as they see fit. As for everyone on the site owning a piece of it. No way.

Gotta say though.... Thats super dee duper cool that Don gets free tire changes. Thanks for sharing that with everyone that has to pay. We are all very happy for him....

You have lots of family layers? Ummm ok

If that is the case, then you know that you will need someone to add several phrases so there aren't any loop holes, but yeah I don't know anything about liability, and I've never had to deal with insurance lawyers or sue happy people. There are also other things to consider, but you should be able to figure that out I hope. Also how many shops have you sign a waiver? None, why because they are required to carry insurance for this type of shit or eat the costs. If you really want links when I have some free time I'll find them for you, but that will the last thing on the priority list.

As for changing tires, I know 2 people that will do it for me locally however I get it done at the track for free so I really could care less about anyone buying a machine. All I did was point out something obvious that all you fools were over looking.
