My R6 makeover.....

So as many of you know I took my R6 in for a carb adjustment and they found a cracked frame. It's going to be out for a while so I decided to paint it.
I thought I would post the progress here and hopefully it won't take too long to get it fixed and running.
The first picture is of the crack in the frame and now it's waiting for the welder to fix it. It's hard to see but it's the best picture I could get.
The next few are the flarings. I have been spending the evenings sanding and sanding and more sanding. I started the tank which had 8 layers of paint on it .

Just a helpful hint on the tank... don't sand all the way to the bare metal if you don't have to. You really just need to get the top few coats off. Leaving some paint gives the new primer something to bond to. Priming over bare metal is a pain. Make sure it is SUPER clean before spraying or you will get bubbles from underneath where the primer didn't bond to the metal. If for some reason you must go all the way to the bare metal, use a stripper. It will save you hours of work.

Same goes for the plastics, except the stripper part. Stripper on plastic is very bad.

Thanks for the advice I really do appreciate it and will take any and all, but I'm not sure what kind of paint or prep was done on the tank so down to bare metal is the only option LOL but I got metal etch ( I think that's what it's called), really good primer, sealer, and cleaner. I will get some stripper tonight I'm all about less work and dust LOL.

The plastic is done we just need to prime, clean, and seal it
Scooterholic is going to practice with his new airbrush gun and some stencils to figure out how I want the graphics, we'll see how it works out it might just end up one color LOL

Thanks,I'm hoping it will turn out nice and I want to powder coat the wheels black (just tossing around the idea), but that will have to wait till the frame situation is figured out.

Just another suggestion. When prepping the bike right before sealer, use dawn the NON scented soap in a spray bottle and wipe down clean. And use a tach cloth to get any other dust on there. Remember slow is always best when prepping. Remember the 3 Ps. PPP = Piss Poor Prep = Piss Poor Paint.

So here's a few pics of the tank. Under the 7th layer of paint was this decal which was about the only thing sticking to this tank, everything else flaked off without much effort. Needless to say I had to strip the tank to medal. I know I know bad very bad but it was better than having the paint flake off in a few months.

Scooterholic promises it will be good as new at some point I'm not sure if he means it or it's just one of those things your husband says when they don't know what to say

Oh yeah sanding sucks

This is where the old blinkers went. We filled the holes because the headlight has intergrated blinkers.

Well Monday is back to work so the progress will be slower next week. Hoping to hear about the frame by Friday. Will keep you posted

So I took a road trip to Oregon to visit family earlier this week (on cruiser) While I was gone Scooterholic did some prep work on the bike. This is what we've got so far and keep your fingers crossed we should have the paint on tomorrow.
It was the hottest day of the week so the primer was drying as fast as he could spray it. I had a lot more sanding to do when I got home

Here are the parts after we sanded with 220 and 320 sandpaper. We have the parts all ready to clean with wax and grease remover, seal them, black base coat, then red base coat, then clear whew it didn't seam like so much till I typed it all out
After they dry I get to wet sand them with 1500 and 2000 grit. When they are all done I get to take them to the shop and have them put back on.

Well the frame has been welded. It needs new carb float needles because gas is leaking into the oil. I need a new battery, clutch cable, I put a new upper triple tree on it (Thanks LIL_SCHMITTY ) and the guys at the shop are going thru the wiring over the next few days. I don't think there is one original wire or connection on the bike LOL

here's a few of the sealer (it's the same color as the primer)
and the black base coat. It's going on pretty clean I was supprised for being shot in the garage.
The pictures are kind of grainy I forgot to set the megapixs. I had it on 3 instead of 10
