I Ride: 2009 Suzuki SV650S

Loud squealing for 3 sec on cold start

This morning my '86 Ninja 250 emitted a loud squealing sound from the crankcase when I started it. After about 3 seconds, it quit squealing and ran fine.

Now, when it's cold, it squeals. When it's warm, it's fine.

I really hope it's not rod or main bearings. Ideas? Opinions?

I Ride: RVT1000R RC51 SP1/SP2

My 90 ZX7 does that. It is the alternator belt (I know, I know bikes do not have belts-Kawasaki’s DO). After changing it, I had to play with the adjustment to get it to stop.

I just check the parts listings. If your bike is the EX250-E1 Ninja 250R (1986) than you do not have a belt. I would try and localize the sound to see where on the motor it is coming from.

'86 to '07 changed very very little, no belts. The 08-09's barely changed as well. The sound if definitely coming from the bottom of the crank case.

If it is, without immediate teardown, you will certainly find out soon enough.

Time to get rid of that bike, move on to a newer bike, 600CC time.

I've been wanting a 600 for a couple years now, but I think it will be more economical to find and fix the problem on the 250. It's not worth much as it sits.

Between work and school, I don't have time to do anything other than leave it on stands in the corner of the garage. When I have time for the project, I'll post up!
