I Ride: 09 HD Nightster | New shop anyone?
So it finally happened and i made the leap to start a new bike shop. I guess you can't really say its brand new because i bought an existing shop. some of you may know about it but its kind of hidden in meridian right on the corner of main and cherry lane near autozone. anyways Moto one was primarily a dirt bike shop that ill gradually change into a street/dirt shop. I can currently get most anything powersports related but until i can start stocking street gear ill be blowing out some of the dirt gear. So there will be some good deals for what ever you ride and i encourage everyone to give the local guy a chance :-). This leads me to my question. what gear brands does everyone like? As a customer what do you want to see stocked on the shelves that can't be found else where? |

Congrats man! I hope business will go well for you. Well what I need and usually buy I doubt any store locally will ever have, but I buy stunt parts. http://thestuntfactory.com/ is a website I buy a lot of items from. As far as gear goes I like Icon stuff. I can't seem to find any local store that has Icon t-shirts or sweaters that I would like. Something other then the logo that is. So maybe that? |

As far as helmets go, I prefer Scorpion. Reasonably priced, good quality! And maybe a little selection of kevlar lined gloves would be nice. Seems like most moto shops in the valley have a crap selection on decent street gloves. CG used to be decent but now they have like 3 pairs other than their built crap to choose from |

ICON. I also think a decent glove selection would be good. Weren't you the one asking about a type of hang out/garage/ bike shop?

Yeah sure was. it was easier to buy existing over starting from scratch. the next step is to find a bigger place and room for mechanic work. I know I've seen icon in my books so ill make a point to look into it. stunt gear, i have no idea about but ill check it out.

Maybe just have a couple small specialty sections like mentioned earlier. One for stunters where they can find the basics for entry level stunting or order through you for more advanced stunting parts. Start out with sprockets, shorty levers, handlebar crash guards, etc. Then another section similar to the stunt for the drag guys. From what I've overheard in the past investment into a nice motorcycle dyno would be a plus but I know that is a big initial investment. As far as drag parts, maybe stock the gear needed to run at firebird like kevlar lined gloves right in that section. Also, extended swing arms, longer chains, etc. The guys who participate in those specific styles of riding can give you a better idea but that's just my idea.

7-oh-7 helmets aren't that bad either, so i'd like to see some more of those. Maybe some Firstgear and more Astar stuff as well. Oh, and if you can get some SKIN T-shirts/hats, let me know. I can't find anyone who has them anymore.

To be honest, it's tough going against the internet and Cycle Gear. I mention Cycle Gear because they have one of the largest inventories and selections, and if they don't have it, they can order it for you. I've seen so many start ups come and go back in Vegas. I think your margins will be best focusing on maintenance or a specialized area, like tires. Everybody needs tires, but a shop is depended on a well qualified mechanic and referals from other riders. I don't live far from your new shop, once you get a qualified mechanic I will consider since I really don't wrench too much on my own. So far Snake River Yamaha has gotten all my business, about $1,000 worth and I've only been in Boise for four months. Good luck. |

I'll definitely come down to pick up some new mx gear. My .02, work with the Stars course and try to get some advertising with them. When I took my class last fall, they gave us a "graduation bag" and had some coupons and stuff for local shops. I'd rather buy local over the internet as long as the service matches the extra price. |

I Ride: 2005 CBR1000RR Repsol, 2001 RM250 | If its snell and dot Im ok with it. If it starts to peel or the padding starts coming unstitched or something then Ill be pissed but thats why I try to do as much research as I think is needed before I but something that will save my melon or skin. AGV have some good looking helmets they just dont fit my big ass head right. |

They have been around a while longer, and actually put out some decent stuff. I wouldn't compare them to the top dogs (shoei, astar, etc.) but around the lines of scorpion, hjc type stuff |

I Ride: 2004 Yamaha R6S | I haven't had any issues with the 7-oh-7 i have. Its snell 2010 and dot rated, and its relatively cheap. As was previously stated, not everyone can afford a $500 helmet. Yes, Shoei and Arai put out good stuff, but in this economy, i will take what i can get thats snell and dot rated and isn't gonna break my arm in order to get it. Plus, i am sure if he contacted 7-oh-7, he could probably get their helmets too. I don't believe they are specific to CG.

Back a few years ago I used to frequent moto1 cause it was the closest place to where we used to live, and the prices were usually very competitive. I guess I will need to head back over to Merician and check it out one of these days.

good deal! I was getting a little nervous when we were on Eagle RD and I believe I heard you doing a burn out on that "bald" tire. I really didn't want to haul your bike back to your house. |
