I Ride: F4i CBR600 | Idaho MC Endorsement
Ok, I would like to ask first, please do not just throw your opinions around on this post. I know you are just itching to click post, start typing and click submit, but please only do this with valid hard proof information. Thank you. As the Title says, Idaho MC Endorsement.... A.) In order to get an MC Permit, according to the Idaho DMV, a requirement is a Valid Drivers License. B.) The S.T.A.R program does not require an MC Permit to take the course (from what I have been told). C.) If you are under the age of 21, you are required to take a course, such as S.T.A.R. Here is the analogy: a 15 year old has a drivers permit, and takes the S.T.A.R program. What can be expected to get an MC Endorsement on the valid drivers license when they turn 16? Would they simply hold on to the envelope and take that in when they get their drivers license? And they would automatically get the "M" endorsement? I have searched all over Idaho DMV, and S.T.A.R - and have come to the conclusion this is a huge grey gapped area..... At one time, I was told you had to be 17 to get an MC license ("M" endorsement on a valid drivers license). The reason I asked to keep to the subject and please post facts about the subject, is to try and keep it simple and clean. Thanks. |

WD, the way I had it explained to me was, my son, who's 14 now, will need to have his license at 16, THEN take the S.T.A.R.S. course, then go back to DMV with his completion certificate and get a new copy of his license with the M/C endoresment on it. A 15 y.o. may be able to take the course, but I was told that they had to be 16 y.o. to get the endorsement. I've never heard anything about having to be 17 to get the endorsement. Hope this helps. Ride safe, Rick p.s. the S.T.A.R.S. office is on Federal Way near where I live, I ride past it all the time. PM me if you want me to stop by there and ask them. I can take care of it on Tuesday, my next day off. |

Anyone under the age of 18 will require a parent's waiver form to take the class. Not 100% sure what the actual minimum age is for the Stars. But MSF is 15.5. I copied and pasted off Stars website on the subject for those who are required to take the class. Having a driver's permit is considered an approved driver education course with MSF, I assume it would be considered the same for Stars. Kind of lame that this state does not allow the Stars program to provide the written test as well. A lot of states have given the program full authority to issue endorsements after a successful completion. If you are under 21: You are required to take, and pass, a motorcycle training course. The STAR Basic I, Basic II or Experienced Course will meet this requirement if the endorsement is added within one year of passing the course. If you are under 17, you must have successfully completed an approved driver education course before enrolling in a motorcycle training course. |

From www.idahostar.org-- "If you are under 21: You are required to take, and pass, a motorcycle training course. The STAR Basic I, Basic II or Experienced Course will meet this requirement if the endorsement is added within one year of passing the course. If you are under 17, you must have successfully completed an approved driver education course before enrolling in a motorcycle training course." Our theoretical 15 year old would then be driving on their learners permit when he takes the class--Yes? Making the question be: once they complete their probation period and get their full license how do they get their endorsement? Answer? AFAIK--the completion card from STAR is good for 1 year. As long as it was under a year ago that they passed the class they would only have to pass the DMV written exam for an MC endorsement, present their completion card and they could receive their endorsement. Make sense? To my understanding--California actually will issue a "motorcycle only" license but no other state I'm aware of does. |

I will have concrete evidence to this matter in less then a week Neither the DMV or the Stars could tell me over the phone what happens once my 15 year old passes the stars class as to whether he would get a permit he could ride a bike on or if he had to wait until he is 16 when he gets his actual drivers license to be legal.Sounds like he waits until he is 16?

Everyone keeps saying 16 to get a drivers license. I thought you got that at 15 in Idaho |

I Ride: Anything i can get my hands on | about 20 years ago when i took it you could get a daytime permit when you were 15 here in Idaho until you turned 16. Now you can get a permit when your 15 where you have to ride around with an adult until you turn 16 and have got at least 52 driving hours in. I think 10 or so hours have to be at night?
