Oregon sales tax on motorcycle

It is tax free to buy a motorcycle, either used or new in Oregon?

Yes. However if you plan on registering it in Idaho then that's when you get hit with the Idaho sales tax.

Whatever state you register your vehicle in, is where you pay your taxes or in Oregon's case, don't pay your taxes. But you still have registration fees, that can be astronomical.

I believe if you buy it and register it in Oregon, than after some time register it in Idaho you will not have to pay sales tax. For an expensive vehicle it may be worthwhile to go through that trouble.

I don't think I can register in Oregon since I am not a resident there.

It doesn't matter the registration and license fee's here are ridiculous. Either way you look at it, it cost more money then you really want to spend. It cost me (if I remember right) about $145 for a two year plate. I can't recall the title fee.

Not only does Oregon have no sales tax on vehicles, but their registration fees are amongst the lowest in the country. It's not based on the value of the vehicle, just a flat rate that is good for two years. That is why when I use to tour with entertainment back in my glory days, our million dollar tour buses would often have Oregon plates. The bus companies were beating the system by registering them under Oregon.

That is interesting to find out.

Although I was jumping for joy when we moved here and found out what the registration fees were. In Utah, you pay a yearly tax on the value of a vehicle. The car that I brought up with me was over 300 per year to register in Utah, so 40 buck a year to me is screaming deal.

I kinda remember that I pay $140 for two years' registration fee on my bike in ID. I am thinking trading in my bike next year, so if there is anyway I can lower the tax and registration fee I would like to know.

Yes, I was pleased how cheap it was to register your vehicle here in Idaho. The real plus was the insurance, it was more than 50 percent cheaper. The sales tax here is very reasonable too, heck of a lot better than 8.2 or something like that. Price of fuel is even cheaper, and the electric bill is very reasonable.

Some people don't realize how good they have it up here compared to the rest of the country.

LOL I remember getting a 1000 dollar power bill several times, the first time I almost shit myself lol. The one thing I miss is the police in Vegas they had way better shit to do than pull you over for doing 5 over.

I just spent either $70 or $90 on an Oregon lost title. But as far as tax on a vehicle from another state to here, you pay tax on the value of the vehicle if you have owned it for less than 6 months. I went through all that fuss last year when my Grandparents decided to transfer all their vehicles to Idaho from Oregon. The registration is way cheaper here according to them, and they have 4 vehicles varying in age from 97-2011, a 5th wheel, a camp trailer, 2 little trailers, a street bike, and an ATV or 2. According to my grandpa the only registration that was cheaper in Oregon was the 2 little trailers, since Oregon doesn't require them to be registered.
