Stolen bikes

WTH is going on here all the sudden I am seeing all these stolen bike posts. Idaho seems so laid back and crime free but now this sounds like California. Are you guys just leaving bikes outside with no form for security? Like a locked garage or some kind of security device if a garage is not possible.

It's that time of year. They start disappearing in broad daylight. Had a couple right in front of BSU last year

I remember that. Usually alot of people are milling around there don't they think something would be looking strange if a person is monkeying around a bike to get it hot wired? How are they taking these bikes just locked steering should cause a thief to do something unusual to get around it.

I Ride: with dubious judgement, but niceness

I used to live over by BSU and had to park my bike outside most of the time. Having lived in Minneapolis and Chicago before moving to Boise I continued to use my "big city" theft deterrent....TWO (2) Kryptonite locks....never had a problem. (even though my neighbor had his bike stolen)
I always figured my best chance of avoiding having my ride ripped off was anticipating the worst and engaging in active prevention.

p.s. One was a big, fat cable lock used to fasten the bike to my wrought iron front porch railing.......good luck fitting THAT into a van or pick-up.
I guess my point is to use everything available, and like Bill, I also rolled my motorcycle through the sliding glass patio door into the living room before, too.
You live and learn, sometimes by your own misfortunes, sometimes by the misfortunes of others.

Again unusual action for a person to do to their bike. Most be no one around how about the locks on the brake rotors that would seem to work. Unless people think carrying a bike is normal practice for the owner to do.

You mean a roadloc? It's a great system but two guys can pickup up a motorcycle and slide it into the side door of a minivan in less then 60 sec. A brake lock isn't going to stop that. Could that draw attention? It sure could, however in this day and age most people don't care unless whatever is happening is happening to them. It's sad but true.
About the only thing a person with out a garage can do, is make sure they're bike is chained down to something. Even that isn't fool proof, a guy would just need a battery powered grinder with a cut-off wheel and the chain is no longer a factor. It would slow them down though.

WOW and it seemed so crime free here, you can't expect idiots not be anywhere...I guess if you like your bike treat it like you do...don't leave it out of your sight for long periods of time and no protection.

When I lived in Tucson in the 70's we usually brought the bikes in the apt.The apt.complex had big iron bars in the concrete to chain your bike to but they would still get stolen. One night two of us were coming back on our street bikes and some guys were trying to steal some dirt bikes at the complex. We tried to chase them down on the bikes and they still got away.I was on a 74 Kawi 750 triple but it wouldn't fit thru the fence where they went.

Crime has steadily been rising in Boise for the last few years. Bad economy coupled with an influx west coasters.

Yup... West coasters. People from large cities that are only a short drive from the western coast line....The ones whom have a strong sence of entitlement to your stuff. The ones whom are buying property in our neighborhoods but never setting foot in them. Only to rent them out to those damn bikers down the road! The ones who's answer to there own stupidity is to SUE the hell outta Idahoins .The ones who get offended about everything regardless whom it was directed. The ones whom have completely destroyed their States economy practicing this very theory. The ones whom have produced some of the most hannis Gang wars and riots we have seen. The stand up citizens we see on COPS every week hooking, buying drugs, fighting about stupid crap. You know, West coasters... If you don't fit the shoe don't try to wear it.

With increased population comes more crime. That's a given. How is that ignorant?

Or are you specifically offended because I said west coast?

Yeah, I don't get why someone would take offense to such a blanket statement. Hell, I grew up in Cali and I know it's a shithole.

It is possible that it could be a weekend run from someone out of town....tryin to wrap my head around the fact that there are so many other ( and much nicer) bikes than mine, so why would they wanna jack an FZR thats beat up?? I mean unless its someone local that we have ridden with ( Not pointing blame, just a possibility ) and they know what all i have done to mine, i can't really fathem why they would want mine. It just irritates the hell out of me that this happened a DAY after i posted it on here to sell it so i could get my son here. Again, not pointing blame, just seems odd.

I'm not sure there is any mod you could do to a FZR that would make it more attractive to a thief over a modern bike. (Don't forget, I'm a former FZR owner)

We had a 6 month old Gixxer 750 on a trailer parked out front of our house. The trailer had a trailer hitch lock on it and the bikes handlebars were in locked position and bike tied down. I went to pick up the kids at their school and was gone 10 minutes, came back and the whole thing was gone!

One month later, we get a call from Boise PD saying that they had in front of them a blue and white GSXR. The guy on it got caught going 80 down Eagle Road and he tried the outrunning the cops game. It took a couple of hours but they got him. We never got the trailer back, the guy said he didnt know anything about that. But, all of our registration and insurance and parts were in this guys garage.

Yeah, parts.. he had taken off alot of the stock parts and put on cheap after market blinkers. Took a heat gun to all the stickers to remove the GSXR look. The bike looked like a salvaged bike. Took the bike to Carls for an extimate, the fan never came on so it rode super hot. Estimate of damage: $total

Cost more in repair than a new bike. Nice thief..took some real pride in a great bike!

Oh, and the best part...since we picked up the bike from the storage place, we had the dudes helmet & keys..his truck key, house key, etc.. and "Ohh, wahh wahh.. we want our keys back!!" the dudes dad told the sheriff. Really?..

The thief lived in Eagle. Far from where we live....odd connection.

Waiting on cash flow. Had a guy back out on a $450 deal, plus waiting till we open it up before I commit. Wanna make sure it's just gonna be the piston kit and not something that is gonna kill my wallet.
