I Ride: with dubious judgement, but niceness

Some kind of late 50's or early 60's Cushman scooter. It was a hardtail frame with big springs on the back of the saddle.
I was such a little skinny 9 year old kid that I couldn't get enough of the momentum needed on the starter pedal to turn it over more than once, so my Dad or my older brother always had to get it started for me so I could ride.
It had an automatic transmission (one speed) and rear brake only.

1979 Honda Z50, my parents bought it brand new for my sister and it got passed down to me.(then passed down to my younger brother) I was 5 years old when i started riding it. Had to pile up bricks to climb on and off it.I rode the snot out of that thing. The last time i rode it i was 16, knees over the bars...It was a great bike!

Started out on a Honda 50 Minibike when I was like eleven. No clutch but it still required you to shift. Did my paper route on the bike. I thought that not having to peddle versus just a twist of the wrist operating the throttle was the nuts. Progressed to a Honda 70 trail bike then a 125 then onto a few different dirt bikes.

You're right. It was a hand full for a kid that didn't know what he was doing. Now I've gone and done the same thing: after a 18 year break from motorcycles, I buy a 2010 FJR1300.
Jeez, I'll never learn........

I Ride: In the dirt

An old 75cc. I think it was a Suzuki, but maybe it was a Yamaha, but could have been a Kawasaki. I dunno, it was 1974, I was 8 years old, and at the time Evil Knievel was jumpin shet on his bike and I remember building a ramp with nails sticking out all over and tried to jump two metal trash cans, crashed the front wheel right into the 2nd trash can, went flying and hit a tree and cracked my helmet. Lost dirtbike for rest of that summer.

I remember at that time I really wanted one of those White "Indian" branded dirtbikes, can't remember which size, but those were great bikes back then. Saved all my newspaper route money and other working money and bought a Honda 250 Elsinore in 1979. Man, that was a bike! I wish I still had it. I'd take off on the trails in the forest behind my house and my dog would follow me for miles. All I cared about back then was girls, my Dirtbike and my dog. Not necessarily in that order.

Now, after years of chasing the "corporate dream", and then giving up on it, it's basically the same. My wife, Daughter, Grand daughter, Dirtbike and my dogs. Life get's easy when you remember who you are.

I Ride: 1999 Moto Guzzi Bassa, 2002 Beta 270, 2009 DR650

I started on a 3 HP B&S mini bike, then a 60 something Suzuki 80 and then gave my parents my life savings (like $100 from B-day, X-mas) and they put in the rest for a brand new Hodaka Ace 100. But it was sitting on the ship for a month or so due to some dock workers strike in San Pedro. I have never liked unions since then.

bunch of old fuckers.

I had a honda cr80 dirtbike for awhile as a kid on the farm. Owned and rode fourwheelers since very young.
I tried to buy a new 96 kawasaki zx6r before my senior year of highschool. Insurance guy called my house and my mom filped out.
So as soon as I moved out I bought a brand new 1999 kawasaki zx9r. Never even rode a street bike untill the day I bought it. Wow.... Did alot of stupid stuff on it. tried to be half ass carefull on it. I never crashed for the first time untill probably my 3rd year riding. started trying to go to fast in the corners and a little bit of stunting. Crashed 4 or 5 times in a couple years. Quite trying to push my self in the corners and don't do any stuning any more. I havn't crashed since. Last couple years about all I do is drag race. Don't street ride much any more.

Dont get me started. I suck after all these years! Its been a weird transition for me bro. All my bikes I have rode till this one have been dirt bikes. Even on street (10+ yrs. exp) all my bikes were enduro or street legal dirt bikes! Cornering - A whole new world compared to a dirt/enduro bike! all my years of riding/racing dirt no one ever brought up counter steering, ever, lol! I have no ego, I can admit I "Suck Ass" on a streetbike in comparison to dirt - Im confident with my abilities in all areas of riding, but my cornering needs a lot of work!! I will not be trying to keep up with you guys! I can always catch up, lol! I know my abilities and always ride within them, Im no Yosh (the guy that cant control himself when passed lookin for a date to slow down etc), lol. That being said, I will be asking a lot of advice in this area from most of you this year. I wish there was a local track I can go to and work on cornering!

I think street bike riders should learn on dirt first if only to learn how do deal with front end washout and other shitty road conditions. Laying down a dirt bike is no big deal. Laying down a street bike is.

I agree 100%! No better place than dirt to learn front brake control and all aspects of bike handling! I just gotta get use to cornering. Im sure it will come in time the more I ride and get use to my FZ.

I Ride: Anything i can get my hands on

I ride both dirt and street and sometimes one riding style interferes with the other. Ever throw your leg out on a cbr in a corner? Hahaha. That being said i have also tried to shut the key off on my dirtbike....ugh! When i was younger it was even worse, it took me forever to get use to riding one after riding the other. I do beleive that coming from a dirtbike background has helped me control the bikes in squirrely situations. Not so sure that its safer to crash in the dirt then on the street? I have wadded it up pretty hard on my dirtbikes. Have yet to crash or even drop my street bikes (knock on wood). I dont ever push it on the street.
