Time your ride--heat advice

Went up 21 to Lowman crossed to Banks came down 55. Was a nice ride

OH--I left the Gowen Chevron at 9:30 and found that the trip up was very nice. By the downward leg of Horseshoe Bend hill (Noonish) things were getting pretty ugly. (Passed a huge pack of sportbikes on thier way up--gave them the thumbs up).

This brought to mind a thought: time your rides! Remember it's freaking hot and you dehydrate quickly at 60+mph as the wind wicks moisture out of you. Stop. Get hydrated. Don't ride in the teeth of the heat.

BE SAFE. Dehydration makes you stupid! Really, your brain doesn't work as well and your internals overwork pushing thick H2O poor blood.

If you're riding for pleasure I'd suggest leaving early in the AM or timing it for right as the heat breaks in the pm (6-7:00pm).

Good luck!

Two of my friends and I rode from mountain home up to fairfield yesterday at about noonish. I completely understand what you mean. By the time we had gotten back I was drinking gatorades like crazy and still feel dehydrated a bit today. I could see how on a longer ride someone could easily get themselves into serious trouble.

You are wise young Jedi. Mesh gear keeps you cooler but you dehydrate quicker (evaporative cooling) so make sure you drink tons. Also, a good sign that you are fully hydrated is needing to stop and pee (as you normally would). Also look for nausea and headaches as warning signs.

Signs that you are really in trouble: flushed appearance & nausea, dizziness or you STOP sweating.

On long hot runs on my DRz I often stick a 20oz bottle of water in the airbox--easy to reach and about the only stowage available. Yes, it makes it run a little rich.

OH...There's stilll a bottle of Diet Mtn Dew out there right now!

'Cuse me.

Re: Time your ride--heat advice

I rode abouto 280 miles yesterday pretty much all day. Nice and hot, but drank plenty of water, carried some sort of bandana that holds water. Poured water ovre my head and shirt. Stayed pretty comfortable. I have done lots of this type of riding. Just went over 29000 miles and my wife just went ovre 1000 on her new FZ1000 she bought last month. We did the Lavender Festival down in Buhl. Good times.

Re: Time your ride--heat advice

Good advice! Can I offer another?? Avoid Riggins unless you go through really early in the day right now!!!

We went to Grangeville Friday, to Lolo MT Saturday and back to Boise Sunday. Went through Riggins at about 3pm Friday - f*cking stupid idea! I hadn't been through there in so long I had forgotten what it was like to ride through HELL. Definately not a good place mid-day when the temps are this high.
