Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

Seems to me that if they are getting less calls and they need to find "busy work" for thier officers they should let a few go. IMHO though, they should focus more on street patrol especialy in places like the bench here where it seems folks are stabbing and shooting each other daily. For public safety, that would be the bigger bang for the buck. But that wouldn't fill the coffers would it?

All in all though, if you are driving or riding outside the legal deffinitions and you get caught you have nothing to gripe about. I know I tend to push past posted limits and it is only a matter of time before I get stopped for that, my modified exhaust, or a quick flick around cages. Nobody's fault but my own when it happens.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

My favorite part is how the law doesn't actually apply to the cops themselves. The other day I followed two staters from BSU and watched them violate numerous traffic laws. They didn't stop for people in crosswalks TWICE, neither signalled a lane change downtown and when we got on the connector I was doing 70 and couldn't keep up with them. Thought maybe they were headed somewhere important but was proved wrong when I saw them get off the connector and go to Sizzler. They must have been really hungry.

the state is looking to trim the fat and so the pork is trying to prove its worth by saying look at all these tickets we are writing, yes we need this big of force and this amount of overtime.

ya know i understand them trying to keep their job but when it comes to BS tickets and coming directly out of my money clip, that pisses me off.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

FYI Cops are travling in pairs so dont think your safe after the first one.. last night around 11 in 4 diffrent spots cops had people pulled over with two cars... On another note, i got pulled over on the freeway for not using a signal to switch lanes but the catch was i never switched the cop came up being an asshole trying to say how he was going to write me up for all this stuff, when i turned and said i hope you had your camera on in your car cause i am going to sue your ass for an illegal stop!!! The guy just looked at me and said have a good night and left it at that! never got the cops name or car number but i wish i had!!!

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

I'm sorry, but my education in law, and my familiarity with law enforcement (Dad was a cop), won't let me casually stroll over that post to the next thread........ yet.

What exactly would a lawsuit for an ""illegal stop" look like? I keep hearing that threat, but nobody seems to have thought it through very well. What legal grounds would that case be based upon? Would you be trying to get money for all time you missed at work because you got pulled over? Or are you tyring to get paid personally by the police officer because you missed out on a imminant game of Wii Fit? Do you feel that a tort claim is justified just because you had to sit on your bike for 10 minutes against your will? Do you think the court would award you punative damages for your inconvienience? Are you wanting to call the ACLU because you fell your constitutional rights were violated? If so, you don't know your rights very well.

The laws of basic search and seizure are central to law enforcement protocol, and thus clearly understood by any cop who passed the entrance exam to be an officer. While I too have been pulled over for some really contrived crap and can relate to your story, I'm also well aware of my options: None.

What exactly constitutes an "illegal stop"?

A cop can pull you over at anytime, for any reason, with the only applicable yardstick being: "reasonable suspicion" for a criminal stop, or under the guise of "public safety", or even simply "in the reasonable course of duty". In fact: A police officer is welcome to park his car sideways on the interstate, and conduct a non-evasive search of your car, ask you to roll down your windows, and even make you step out of the car and frisk your a$$. On a WHIM. They can do that to you and every other gridlocked car on that freeway, and you can't do shit about it. Not following his instructions will net you an obstruction charge EVERYTIME. It would be nieve think that cops can't, or won't, make up a justifiable reason afterwards if questioned about it.

Every police officer is well aware that just being a police officer shields them in civil court if their actions were done while in the commission of his duty. This is why bounty hunters have such a difficult job, because they are not so civilly protected while legally doing their job.

Knowing this, I find it very odd that any officer would, or could, ever feel pressured by your lawsuit threat. After all, threats of lawsuits by people who don't know their legal rights are a daily occurance for most every police officer. If anything, they find it funny and laugh about it over doughnuts. (I know, because I have spent alot of time with dads officer buddies as they shared those stories, over doughnuts.) I am also very aware that when someone does that, most cops find it in them to make your precious time spent pulled over, much worse. If the cop sent you on your way, rest assured that it wasn't due to your empty and misguided lawsuit threat. The only good result of you having his name or number, would be so that you know not to make that threat to him next time and thus save yourself the basic rule violation ticket that he will almost certainly give you.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

I got pulled over on the freeway the other day. The cop came to the window and his first question was "is that a zero or an O on your plate?" He then told me that the DMV had no record of me registering my truck, so I pulled the registration card and tossed it at him and said why do I have this then? I think the jack ass was just looking for something that he could ticket me for.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

I find it infuriating that a cop can misuse or abuse his power just because he can or can make up a way to justify it even by a lie and he can get away with it. So if a cop is in a bad mood and decides to pull someone over for a b*llsh*t reason and take it out on them its okay by writing spendy bogus ticket. Basically the cops can f ck hard working americans and no one is over seeing or delegating their behavior. So Im leaving in less than two weeks to go to basic and ait and be a part of the military that protects the rights we dont have. Wow that motivating.

I think there is something really wrong with that idea.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

Isnt there a better way they can contribute to society other than finding bogus reasons to pull people over and right stupid tickets. Wow our economy is going down the crapper and thousands of people are out of work or laid off with no income and they are going to drain every penny from these peoples pockets over stupid tickets for violations they themselves commit everyday. Can you say "HYPOCRITICAL" oh thats right there arnt any laws that apply to them, opps never mind

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

OMG! I didn't mean to start a police bashing thread. I am calling bs because we are all suffering some with this "echonomic" crisis and the cops openly decide that they are going to go after US to make more money. Maybe we should be thankfull that they warned us that they would be running around trying to catch every bs violation. It appears that they have been true to their word because I see blue and red every time I have been out the last couple of days....and in force. Smart people will slow down a little and watch out. If you have been thinking about mounting your licence plate in a legal fashion...here is your incentive. Oh...and if you are the guy with the bike all beat up from bouncing it off the parking lot, no blinkers, dented tank, flat spotted rear tire, giant rear sprocket, throwing the bird at the man....yeah FTP! Your very presence on the road says the police and everyone else on the road! This is not a personal attack to any poster but more to an additude that I am evidently too old to understand. Those offended by my comments feel free to have a hissy fit and I'll have a good chuckle.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

Im in school for dispatch/ Emer. Telecom. I work with these guys and I talk to them on a daily basis.

Cops are just people doing their jobs. Ive had my fair share of what I would call unreasoned traffic stops and BS tickets but really I think the FTP attitude is ridiculous.

If you arent hiding anything then who cares if you get pulled over? Id rather they were there when I didnt need them than not there when I do

Either way dude, cop is going to GIVE you a reason why he pulled you over. Even if its the most retarded thing youve ever heard. Cop isnt just going to be like "cuz I felt like it" so wtf are you even arguing about?

License plates on dirtbikes? really??

But I think there needs to be more hate towards the lawmakers than the cops.

If vehicle enters the street, it has to have insurance. Bill of Sale only gives you a grace period for plates.

I agree though, cops just enforce, no point in arguing with them. Legislative, and to some degree, the Executive is where all the blame lies. One thing that burrs me is when they have secret voting sessions over things that affect us. They recently voted to block OHV plates on city streets. Did we hear anything? no. Same with the new limits on kid bikes. Did any of us see that one coming?

Lawmakers dont make cops pull people over for bs reasons they just make all these bs laws so cops can justify a senseless stop, its at the cops descresion as to who they pull over and for what reason if any

Way to go law enforcement lets help the ecomony spiral down hill even faster

Dont get me wrong cops are here to enforce the law and keep the peace so why dont they go bust some crack dealer who is tarnishing the youth of tomorrow and quit making hard working americans suffer even more financially.

A legitimate stop is a legititmate stop I can handle that but some of the nonsense shiot they pull you over for now a days, really? Please refer to previous paragraph and reference statement made about crack dealers.

Lawmakers create BS laws and reg to MAKE MONEY. Then they up the required quota for traffic stops.

Thus, cops will pull you over for BS reasons in order to keep their own jobs.

No its still your responsibility to hound the owner of the vehicle to make sure it insured. I would know I delt with a similar situation. So if your buddy is drunk and you are sober, better make the drunk buddy find his insurance card before you can drive him home or you could be getting a whooper of a ticket. WAY TO GO GOOD SAMERITIAN HERE IS YOUR PAT ON THE BACK A BIG OLE FATTY TICKET FOR TRYING TO HELP SOMEONE OUT. Thats not what my situation was but can happen to anyone

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

The cops may have to pull over said number of people but they delegate who they pull over and for what, legistlation isnt there saying you have to pull over 3 people for speeding , 1 for no insurance, 5 for seat belts no they just say pull over 10 people a day, the cops decide for what bs reason if any they pull those 10 people over for.

Re: Cops getting ticket happy?

Im just saying there is enough drug dealers, robberies, domestic violence, child abuse ect.. ect.. ect.. why arnt they focusing more on that instead of bs traffic tickets, oh thats right cause those POS's dont pay taxes or tickets that keep cops employed. So they are going to focus on bs traffic violations that pull revenues and let the leaches of society run amuck makes total sense to me, I dont know why I didnt see it before.

So Im leaving in less than two weeks to go to basic and ait and be a part of the military that protects the rights we dont have. Wow that motivating.

I think there is something really wrong with that idea.

So they are going to focus on bs traffic violations that pull revenues and let the leaches of society run amuck makes total sense to me, I dont know why I didnt see it before.

Yeah its nice to know cops are around and all, but when a cop pulls you over and hasles you for nothin and pulls his gun on you to F with you while his partner is laughing at it all.. Thats BS!!! there are reasons why i joined the military and not the police force... get your facts straight missy!!! on a higher note.. I love you all
