Not just different compounds, but different construction methods and different temperature ranges. This is a good thread. Thanks for starting it with a good post WD. Let's not let it get out of hand. I know nothing of high performance track tires and I was under the misconception that new street tires (although I haven't seen one of these in a few years) needed to be "cleaned". My advice on new tires would be to be careful for the first few miles until you have adjusted to the behavior of the new tire until it is comfortable. While checking out the link on this, I ran across an article from Sport Rider on what might be a more important aspect to a lot of us. http://www.sportrider.com/features/1...ace/index.html I like this mag and need to reup my subscription. But my Motorcycle Classics sub takes precedence. |

Shadow, I am not going to argue this, I do not spend my time looking for things meaningful to help others to have you argue your opinion. As for the differences in the tires, how many corners have you, YES YOU taken at over 100MPH? Ok then enough. I thought this was a good article that was informative to our local riders. If you ride from your house past the long straight after the bridge on hwy 21 to do the Idaho City run, your tires are going to be plenty warm enough to have some fun. as far as intentionally warming up your tires for a street ride seems like a waste of time and energy to me. cause by the time you get to an area where you can get a decent lean angle you already have good heat in your tires just from your normal riding ways to get there. so braking/accelerating hard, weaving, holding a lighter to your tire or whatever you feel you need to do is already done by normal riding.

WD, I am not arguing with you at all, or that the info in the article is wrong. I in fact believe it to be true. I was merely trying to have a conversation in regards to if the info was applicable to street tires on the streets. I see enough data to show a significant difference between street and race tires and that a tire is not just a tire. I wonder how they react different and how to apply that difference. Since I am not done reading Twist of the Wrist, I will reserve a conclusion till then.

Also if you ever make it to a track day - they will go over this in the rider meeting in the morning about properly heating your tires up. They will also say don't be the guy that wads your bike. Then again there are several variables that will also work for you or against you in regards to tire choice, air pressure, track temp, ambient temp, suspension settings, etc but in the end it won't make a difference if you are on touring tires, street/sport tires or race tires you will build the heat in the tires the same way.

"scrubbing" in new tires is exactly that, getting rid of the residue from the molds. every new set of tires i get get a good workout to idaho city/ lowman shortly after install. quite a few guys have commented when i show up on a ride with tires that still have the nubs on them. bailey has a good point as well, the travel time to the ride will warm up your tires for you (until you sit in the parking lot for 30 minutes to an hour waiting for stragglers. and sonic, quit trying to read into the article and just read it at face value. more time on the edge of a tire and you will appreciate and understand why you should clean off and warm up your tires. |
