AMA / HD announce XR1200 spec racing class

AMA Pro Racing (aka DMG) and Harley Davidson have now created an XR1200 spec racing class for 2010.

I actually like the XR1200 (at the very least, it looks like a fun and competent Harley to ride through the canyons) but can't possibly imagine it on a road course.

There's a hilarious translation of the press release on Asphalt & Rubber:

Did you see Seth Enslow break the Harley Davidson long jump record on one?

Hold on, they created a series of racing for one exact model and brand of bike? Does that mean that every bike model will have its own race series?

Its common to have a one model spec series -- they tend to be beginner friendly and affordable so its a good way to get people involved in racing. Spec series are usually built around a smaller and more affordable bike though - they're also generally based on a bike that's meant for taking corners and has a riding position that make sense in a race.

Reminds me of the AHRMA bikes, well some of them. Not what I would want to race but a grid full of these bikes might be fun until lap 2 when you have to start dodging parts/bolts on the track.

Either that or the safety wire requirements would add an extra 30 lbs to the bike weight.

Hey, what's a 2% weight gain going to matter?
