Anyone Riding Friday?

The weather is reported to be pretty good (70) on Friday, so I took the day off. Is anyone else riding / taking the day off? I don't have anything in particular planned, but perhaps a trip out to Owyhee Dam, or Boise to Simco Rd, to Grand View to Marsing, or something like that.

Have never, ever been to Owyhee Dam. What's the usual route there
from Boise? Doesn't look like there's a cafe around those parts unless
you stop in Adrian.

I go Caldwell/Notus/Parma/Roswell/Adrian and then follow the signs. BTW, when I used to fish out there, I always saw a cop out by the river.

Um.... jerk!

j/k

BTW: I wouldn't be too spirited in that canyon, I remember the roads aren't in fantastic shape. It's really more of a relaxed ride out there and back. I typically bring a little sack lunch to have at the park when I get there. I threw a couple ideas out there. Keeping in mind the great temps on Friday, I am open to go just about anywhere. I am on vacation that day, and would prefer a KSU as near noon as possible. If nobody else is as lucky as I to have vacation time left, I will just have to find another way to entertain myself for the afternoon.

I wouldn't mind a casual (might be 2 up ) afternoon (warmer weather ) ride on Friday. I don't know if i've ever been to the dam or not, so the longer the ride the better if the weather stays the same as the predictions.

Appreciate the link. Seems to me as if Owyhee Dam is basically a drone
with craptastic surface in the twisty bits. Might be better in Spring as a
side trip to/from Vale (Starlite Cafe) rather than as a destination.

Another option you could consider doing would be the Jordan Valley Loop
with lunch at Old Basque Inn or JV Cafe. Hot drinks/ice cream at Skinner's
Rockhouse. Just be sure to take Sommer Camp Rd btw 78 and 95 (watch
for gravel at the 10-15mph turns).

Have to get my daughter from school by 3pm on Friday.

I do owe you a thank you, that was a silver platter! LMAO

If you really want to pull weeds, I have 2 young boys that could use some outdoor activities! LOL it beats having to pay someone to watch them. LOL

Well I am out for this one, because I am one of those people that have no Vaca time left, next year I will try not to break my clavicle and be forced to take vacation, so more time for riding.

Whatever your plans, be sure to post results and pics! I like the Norhtwest Experience Outdoors!

Thanks for that. I have been pretty slow to update it lately. Sorry to miss you on Friday, most people have used up their vacation by this time of year. I still have two weeks of "use it or lose it" left, since I only did Fridays this year. Some day I will learn to use it when the weather is fine, rather than wait until it gets cold and crappy outside.

Back on topic - I may just head out to Hwy 78 and putt around during the day.

I need to add another post - anyone riding on Saturday? I am getting an itch to head to Oxbow. If thawed the whole way, may well be the last chance this year.

Lookin forward to riding this weekend, so hopefully there aren't 3 different threads again w/ everyone going different ways. It'd be nice to get everyone on the same ride and see like 30 or more riders together. Plan a route that hits everything for everyone so we can make it a larger group. I'm open for Friday, Saturday and Sunday as long as we're home before dark aka freezing time.

If you wait until the middle of the week or wait for another weekend I'd gladly go to Oxbow or Owyhee with you.
Oxbow is great just don't go when it is wet, it is very slippery when wet.
Owyhee is really fun when the mountains are closed and I like to go the back way through Homedale and then along the Snake to Adrian. I can't comment on food stops because it it a short enough ride that I only like to stop at the end. BYOB lol This is a nice Wintertime ride and I have done it a couple of times every year I have lived here. I just happen to be out of town for the moment and can't join you.

That's how I have always done it - picnic lunch at the end - nothing wrong with that!

Well, I plan to ride this winter on clear days, and will certainly like to go with you. Who knows about the weather next weekend, but may just plan on it. I just want a nice long ride this weekend, soaking up the 70 degree weather.

It depends more on the weather conditions than our desire to ride. I'm usually up for a middle of the week ride, weekends, etc. Just as long as it's clear and not freezing like we did last weekend...it was fun, but I don't know if I could do that again.

Layers man. I was pretty comfy other than my hands, which were on the verge of being cold all day.

Another idea, head up to Cascade for a late lunch and head back. If we leave early enough, could continue up 55 to McCall, get to New Meadows, take 95 back toward Payette, get on 52, go to either Emmett or Caldwell, and end it. That would be pushing 7pm if we leave at noon.

There's nothing wrong with 30 riders meeting up, just make sure you all leave in smaller groups of 10 or so staggered by 20-25 minutes apart. Set up with the fastest riders...ie those that tend to run up front anyways and aren't as afraid to run into . Then your middle group leaves, followed by your pace riders who run sweeper to make sure everyone gets to the meetups ok.

Doing that also gives whatever diners or restaurants you stop at an easier time processing orders if they get ten or so orders out then the next group arrives and so on, and no one is left waiting 30 min for a freakin cheeseburger!!

As for looking for squids in the ditch, If you know someone is not as experienced of a rider you insist flat out that they run in the middle group and not ride above their head, but even then it happens. so just remind everyone that getting to meetups in one piece is more important then getting there first.

I agree, but put the middle group up front so they can warn us faster rider about the cops

Agreed 100 percent. I've got riding w/ complete squids who were so busy looking around to see what everyone else was doing that they couldn't hold their own line on the left/right side of the lane. I'm a firm believer that people should rider staggered and stay there just in case there is a panic breaking situation were not running into the person in front of you.

That actually teaches bad riding form, and won't allow you to properly corner. Staggered in the straights single file and use your lane in the corners. Then again nobody should be riding your ass to begin with, and on a group ride nobody should be on their brakes unless there is an emergency. If you are riding your pace it won't be a problem but if you are pushing limits well then shit could happen.

But if people are riding staggered and seperated enough front and rear from each other, then i'll have the whole width of the lane to be able to take those turns. I've had people that don't ride staggered at all, then I've got some guy sitting on my shoulder in a turn, which I hate...especially if his dumbass is on the inside and starts to go wide in the turn. I don't see how riding staggered is bad.

i agree with stubby staggered in the straights is great but if you try to stagger in the corners it could end up a short ride for somebody (especially if you are riding with people that don't ride together enough to know each others riding). If you tr to stagger in a corner you can make the person ahead of you feel crowded.

I was on a group ride where someone tried riding staggered in the corners and I didn't have mirrors and it made me uncomfortable because instead of finding my line I was constantly lookin over my shoulder trying to find him.

Single file in the corners is the smart way to go and then stagger in the straights.

And the less experienced riders should be in the middle of the last (slower) group.

I never said to stay staggered in the corners too, that's why I said before about how I hate people being on my sides in the corners. If they'd stay staggered like their supposed to, then I'd have the whole lane to myself when we get into those corners. I hate taking corners w/ guys who can't stay staggered, then when I'm in the corners I've got some tool on my 5 or 7, up my ass while I'm trying to use the whole lane to avoid gravel, choose my line, etc. We're on the same page, I just either wasn't being clear or you guys assumed I said stay staggered 100 percent of the time.

So what'd we decide for todays ride? I got my new headphones lastnight, extra cellphone battery is charged, tankbag is staying home so I can tuck under my double bubble this time...fat kid is ready ta go!
