How damaging are clutch wheelies?

I have a 2007 ex250 and in order to do a I clutch from first gear throttle and release. Still suck at them but you have to start somewhere right?

My question is how damaging is this to the gears? My brother told me that when I do this one gear spins increasingly fast and when it collides with the others it grinds and slowly breaks. It sounds realistic to me, but you guys must know more about this then him since he is comparing it to cars.

Anyways let me know please and thank you!

This MUST BE "Noobie flame bait".

"Hi! I'm new! I just bought a ninja and am now trying to wheelie it before I leave the dealership driveway. Is this a good idea? Opinions? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?"

Reminds me of a Far Side cartoon:

I actually had it for a few months and I bought it used, and I just started practicing for the first time yesterday. So if that is noob stuff then yes I am and I honestly don't care to be offended by that.

That is also why I posted, so I can learn. Isn't that the best way to learn? Ask questions?

I don't. I got used to people like him a long time ago.

Plus I am not one of those ruthless people who try to wheelie as soon as I get on a bike.

I actually practice in the back of a new area that is completely empty to make sure I don't hurt anyone, and I am only working it up slowly as I don't want to damage the bike or myself.

as to your question.. the gears are already engaged.. they do not seperate when you pull the clutch in.. the clutch plates slam back together transfering the power. if the gears pulled apart when you pulled the clutch in they would grind every time you slip the clutch to take off from a dead start.

So then does this mean no harm is caused to the gears and the bike?

Don't mind the jackass with the cartoon! The slipping action of your clutch will not "damage" your bike at all. It may however make your clutch plates wear out quicker than normal, but this really shouldn't be an issue and you'll have to eventually replace it anyway Wheelie on brotha!!

I would say for a comparison that launching a bike like at the drags or in a race is way worse on the clutch plates if that helps put it into perspective at all... When I first started doing a lot of wheelies I was concerned about it also, but after many many many many many wheelies and some time I learned first hand that it's not that big of a deal. Also like I said clutches are cheap!

And are clutch plates easy to replace? Like do it yourself? I figure if I can do it myself I would rather then pay someone to do it!

Although launching in harder on the clutch plates clutch ups are harder on the clutch basket. but That takes a long time and a lot of wheelies before you see that

More amazing to me than the question at hand is that a 250 can even wheelie from 1st gear in the first place. Amazing.

By clutching it up YES. almost anything can be wheelied! Just have to find out where that point of bringing it back is. The Yamaha TTR230 which only makes 17HP and probably weighs as much as the 250 and it clutches up to a wheelie just fine. You also have to take into consideration sprocket gearing as well.

Happy practicing!

Yes, as long as you have "some" mechanical prowess it's pretty simple.

Damn it! I think they are on to me! Sorry man, I always go for the laugh first, and your gotta admit, this had all the trimmings of a classic forum setup..

Wheelie good advise: Get a dirtbike. If you can wheelie a dirtbike, you can wheelie just about anything. It's a dance of throttle control, balance and brakes. If you are "learning" to wheelie on a street bike, damage to your gears should be the least of your worries. Plan on breaking everything else first. Dirt bikes don't mind getting punted into the weeds. Shiny streetbikes mind very much.

Thanks for those tips guys, as far as dirt biking goes for practice I kind of figured that much from watching videos and how much easier it seems it is, at least to get it up. I don't have the extra money for one atm, and I will just practice on my 07 for now.

I will PM the spot to you guys that asked.

as for tearing up clutches, i have the same clutch in my bike that was in it when i bought it in june of 08. that think has had 200-300 hard launches on it and is still working well enough to pull low 1.6 60ft times.

Not to rain on the parade, but with that sudden snap, won't that stretch your chain doing clutch wheelies?
You guys are the experts, I haven't had a chain drive bike in a while.

Maybe you should define stretching your chain? LMAO

This brings up a very good topic, maybe we should actually start a "What is chain stretching" thread? LOL This outta be good, can't wait to see the responses from all the SMRT people...

I think the wear and tear on your bike is all relative. I started learning wheelies thanks to the tutelage of R1Bran, I got to where I could carry a decent first gear pop up.

Now did I notice any undo wear on my bike?? not really, the clutch still feels fine, the chain did get loose on me a couple times but I think it was more from the axle shifting forward ever so slightly and causing me to go from a half inch of play to about 3/4" inches of play. Thats pretty insignificant. And once I get them down to where I'm a little smoother then I won't be so hard on the chain the clutch, and my rear sprocket.

But back to what I was saying about it being relative; if you never ride your bike to its absolute mechanical limits are you getting all of your enjoyment out of it?? Learning to wheelie may be mildly hard on it, but if you also just left the bike in the garage then you for starters aren't getting your enjoyment out of it but it also isn't any good on your seals to just sit there without being ridden.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the chances of doing mechaincal damage are slim, the chances of fockin up a wheelie and crashing it are greater than anything. but in the end if you wanna learn to something like wheelie your motorcycle you take chances in learning that skill. But in the end you get a hell of a lot more enjoyment out of your ride and thats why I ride a bike.

and last but not least if you learn to wheelie your bike, when someone asks you if you can wheelie a motorcycle you don't have to lie and say uhhh....sure... But thats just my
