I Ride: 06 GSX-R1000, 01 Yammy V-Turd 650, and 1979 Honda CM 185 Twin Star putt putt project | So I have a question for sponsored riders
So I have a guy who is going to sponsor me this year. He pretty much wants me to be a billboard for his business. Now I know thats kind of the point inbeing sponsored, but he wants advertisement consisting of most of my bike, my leathers, and my helmet. So my question I guess would be, How much should a sponsor pay if he is going to take up that much space? I mean hell my the custom paint I was gonna get seems kind of like a waist, but at the same time this guy is paying well for it? So any opinions?

Space? You are only 4 ft tall with that amount of space all he has to pay is gas. ![]() Sorry had to.

I suggest you charge no more than he's willing to pay and no less than you're willing to do it for--a fair price is purely subjective. I worked in advertising once, and rates were basically set by what people were willing to pay. You might do a little research to see what he pays for other local advertising to get some ideas.

I would NEVER paint a sponsor on anything bike or helmet...I would use a vinyl graphic, so you could peel it off if they didnt renew...What are your responsiblities to this said sponsor? Tit for tat...

whats he sponsoring you to do.... ...how much is he really going to gain from your advertising.... ...how much is his sponsorship really worth it to you...are you doing it for the paint job, doing it for drag strip entry how is it really going to benefit you....?does it really cost that much to drag a bike or am I missing something...(mechanical not included obviously) |

Well seems how you don't hold the #1 plate, and at Firebird you don't really get to shout out your sponsor in the winners circle to many people it would be up to the sponsor. Some sponsors only give you discounts on parts, yet you have to place a sticker on your bike, and wear a patch on your leathers. As for the helmet, I wouldn't put stickers on it. If somebody sponsors you that is exactly what you are, and advertisement. Part of your resume, should list the dates you will race (and you need to keep these unless you are in the hospital), places you will be (events outside of racing, and not street riding) where you will be showcasing their product, training etc. They want to see you out getting them business, and talking about them in a good way. If a company was to give you $200 for drag racing locally that would be a decent sponsor to slap a sticker on the bike and wear a patch for. They might even require that you put a sticker on your trailer too. The more money they give you the bigger the ads will be, and the more hoops you will have to jump through. Every sponsor will have a contract that you sign, that specifies the rules and yes they can drop their sponsor during the season if you don't meet their expectations. Some companies will donate money to you for tax reasons, although you still need to promote them every chance you get and they normally don't have contracts but they also don't hand out money per race, its normally a one time payment and normally not a lot of money. Once you start winning races, getting their name in the press, getting exposure of their patches and stickers your amounts will increase as long as you fit their image and live up to the contract. If this is for paint, most painters will only give you a discount on the paint, and then slap a sticker on your bike. Good luck with the sponsors. Last edited by stubby; 01-21-2010 at 10:56 AM. |

It would also depend on the company(what its for) and if it is just money or its free bees as well and if it is a company that you are willing to endorse |

one other thing you need to remember is that they will expect some decent results. now dont take this wrong but having one lucky day doesnt make you a sponsorable rider in my book. you need to have something under your belt if you want to continue with it. if you are doing it to look cool on friday and saturday nights, dont do it. it will only make the relationship between you and that person shaky at best. |

i have never been sponsored but when my dad gets sponsored he NEVER TAKES CASH. He will however, let them buy his tires, 4 link suspension, turbos, intercoolers and things like that. He will never PAINT anything on his suit, car or helmet but he will put stickers on the car and at the end of the year, if they do not renew their sponsorship then they get pulled and replaced with someone who will.

What did you say to this guy to make him think you were worth sponsoring? I thought sponsors were for big time shit...or people that invest alot of time in money into making their bikes competitive (ie extended swingarms, sprocket conversions, power adders, ect)

Any rider at any level can be sponsored. Most sponsors however like to see wins which equals more advertising for them. Most novices/amateurs don't get big sponsorships unless they know somebody, and a lot just come in the way of discounted parts/gear which even then helps. The only draw back is you then must use their stuff so it might actually cost you more in the long run.

Well I asked him how much he sponsors the car at meridian and he said we won't go there lol. It will all be vinyl stickers on the bike. The leather will be stitched and the helmet he will by as well as the leather. The only thing with paint is I might do a scheme close to his business colors. And as to what you said Don, I already told him I have only been out there a few times and this will be my first full season to race. He just wants to have his name out there like he already has at meridian. Besides most of it is a tax write off to him anyways. I also told him that if I go out I will test and tune the rest of the day whenever offered. As for lazy He is sponsoring me to to get his name as many places as possible, besides his radio advertisement. I will pretty much be a billboard for him, and in return I get some very nice benifits. It is a business I believe strongly in and a company I am working with on other business. As for putting the name out there and advertising my bike isn't used for just track, so he will be getting advertising everyday pretty much. |

It was actually somebody I know and have been in business for. As for being serious and investing time, I will be at every race, and advertising pretty much every time I get on my bike. And I will be investing in my bike also.

Actually, I think Pimpit is withholding who is talking to him about sponsorship to keep anyone else from jumping in and trying to take it away from him. I say go for it. Any little bit helps. |

I am willing to say at this time is it is a local business that I am working with on some projects. This thread wasn't about flaunting and being all "oh oh I got a sponsor". It was more along the lines of how much should I be getting for taking up that much space.

Obvioulsy he wouldn't tell anyone right now, hell, for the first time I actually understand and agree with him to not say something. Not like it would be that hard to steal it from him if they had any clue how he is on a bike. Last edited by whitedevil; 01-21-2010 at 10:36 PM. |

As of now I am not sponsored by Dinos. Once we get it open I might be. But if I am it will not be my main sponsor. So long story short I can't get sponsored by a business that isn't opened.
