I Ride: As often as possible!

I want to start racing my dirty bike!

Like the title says, I want to start racing my yz250 but I dont really know how to go about it. Basically I want to race as many different types of events that I can afford to race. I feel like I would be more competent doing the desert/worcs/gncc/harescramble type of racing but I would also like to do a few mx races here and there. I just enjoy riding soooo much that I feel it is time for me to actually get somewhat serious about it and try my hand at all different forms of dirt motorcycle racing.

So, how do I get started?

I Ride: on sidewalks if needed.

I'd say holler at WD and get hooked up with the outlaws. I know they do a bunch of racing through SIDRA.

For desert racing go here and check out the rule book and the various classes:
http://www.sidraracing.org/SIDRA_Des...g/Welcome.html

For MX, I'm sure you already know about PV and OMC. If you need more info let me know.

Shortly I will have info up on ISB for hill climbs, desert racing, and other things for the dirty bikes. The first desert race is in Feb, at Oreana. You should come out with Buck and I next weekend for the PV race. And your might want to talk to Buck (Hellfire) as he wants to do the ISDE, and some scrambles in UT this year.

I am for sure wanting to do the ISDE race as well as the SIDRA stuff this year. Thanks for the SIDRA link! I had been looking for that. I plan on running a few MX races at PV as well as clay's peak, but I dont know if I can do the OMC stuff since I dont have the time to do all the membership duties due to my lame azz school schedule this semester.

I doubt I will be able to afford to do many out of state events, but I am always willing to keep an open mind about it. It will really just depend on my financial situation at the time of the event.

I guess I need to get my SIDRA and AMA cards asap.

How do you figure out what color backgrounds and what race number I will need to put on my bike for the SIDRA events? I would be going for the beginner C class.

Is the PV race still on? I just checked their website and it said "this weekends race has been cancelled due to frozen terrain". And does PV require an AMA card?

If it warms up they might reopen the race. we will see. As for racing this year i plan on hitting only a few dessert races and i want to throw together a group of riders for the ISDE in idaho city. Its time for my butt to hit the track and stick with it.. Dessert racing is a great learning experince and will teach you how to be fast in the nasty stuff. but the track is the place to go if you want to go anywhere. As soon as my new gear gets in this week i will be more than happy to ride with anyone. We need a group of riders who want to race everything from track to dessert and learn from eachother and not just dick around all day and get a little more serious. anyways I will be running the Orena race next month in the lite B class. need some practice time so if you want to hit it let me know

I want to race pretty much every form of dirtbike racing I can just to get used to the whole racing competetive atmosphere. Eventually I want to focus mostly on the MX side of things and then do just a few other type of races here and there just like what you are doing. I really dont feel like I am competent enough at the track stuff yet to want to do much mx racing YET. I definately want to spend as much time as possible on the tracks to improve my skills. I am still learning the whole jumping thing. I just need LOTS more seat time on the track and I will get it!

I want to start riding alot again here very soon, so we will definately have to go riding.

Lets do it.. just because your not competetive does not mean that should stop ya from racing everything you can do.. i think the more you race the better you get due to the fact you push your self harder.. but so do the medical bills

I dont too much care about being competetive right now, it is just that I want to get more comfortable with jumping before I actually race on the track. Right now I can jump ok, but when I am on the track I get the death grip due to how intense of an experience it is and because of that I end up getting arm pump really fast. I dont know if I could finish a whole moto yet. I always scare myself once the arm pump fully sets in and then causes me to get a case of whisky throttle off of some jump causing me to way over jump it or case it. I have only been to the track a few times though, so I kindof expected it to mess with my mind a bit. I totally want to race mx though, I just want a bunch of seat time at practice so that I can get more comfortable with the whole experience. I will get better for sure, I am by no means going to give up trying and learning to be better on my bike. I just dont want to bite off more than I can chew and end up getting hurt because of it. But, I WILL for sure race my bike on some MX tracks this year, I just want to make sure that I am ready.

Ever since I was a little kid watching guys like McGrath, and RC race every weekend I have wanted to race MX, and this IS going to be the year I am going to do it! I am so excited I get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it. I cant wait.

All this talking about riding makes me want to go riding. lol

When are they going to start running practice again out at PV?

as soon as the weather gets better and the track is open more i am just going to grab a season pass and run the track every weekend. Everyone gets arm pump even me.. It gets super bad sometimes but you just got to tell youself to relax breath and barley hold on to your grips. you should be holding onto your bike with your legs not hands. remember that. thats why you see all the pros with tons of grip tape on the side of there bikes..

Some great advice and open minds so far, nice to see!

As for your number for SIDRA, it would depend on which class you enter. C is where a lot of guys enter in to start, but to be honest, C class has got to be one of the more competitive because of all the different entries plus it is the largest class in SIDRA. Hit me up and we can get you the Application and Membership card instead of you mailing it in if you prefer. AMA card can be purchased at any of the AMA sanctioned races as well.

The more different stuff you do, the more versatile you are, glad to see such enthusiasm!

Would'nt running just sportsman for the race be enough for him?? since he does not plan on running the whole year?? Thats what i plan on doing untill ISDE I just want to run the race. Its not like your racing for money. anyways just a thought. Do you have to have a sidra card no matter what?

It's true! lol. yea what Hellfire said, you don't have to have a SIDRA card, you can just enter into the sportsman class to run the race. Heck you don't have to be a SIDRA member to run any of the races in any of the classes. The only thing being a SIDRA member will do for you is get you a number for the season and you get points for your races. Non-SIDRA riders don't get points.

Thanks for pointing that out.

That is what I will do then. I doubt I would be able to run the whole series so to me the points would be worthless anyways. That saves me a little bit of money! Thanks guys.

I Ride: CBR 954RR and what ever else I want

And. U don't need to be a member of OMC to race. if U want to practice @ that facility then U need a membership.

Last I knew you didn't need ama card to race anything local. Except the National hare and hound this spring and maybe the Idaho city 100, It all depends on the insurance carried by the promoter.

I would sugest as much hard core practice as possible if You want to survive the idaho city race. It's a 100 hile qualifier for the ISDE so they make it pretty tough.

I'd come watch some MX races at OMC or PV, I might even think about helping in the pits

It's good to see you getting into racing Idahoballer! Let us know when you're going racing.

Yeah, thats the problem with OMC. I want to be able to practice at the track before I race on it, but depending on how well my moto skills are progressing I may just do a race or two out there, and hope that I can figure out the track fairly quick. I had planned on joining this year but my school schedule has eliminated that possibility until the semester is over.

And as for the ISDE, hard core practice is the only kind of off road stuff that I really enjoy and it is what I am best at. I love tight technical single tracks with gnarly hill climbs and stuff. That is for sure my specialty as of right now! I have talked to quite a few people who have attempted the race and they all said it was super technical difficult stuff most of the time. It wouldnt surprise me if I didnt finish the race, but I am sure as hell more than willing to give it my all. I just want to try it and see what happens. But, having said that as soon as the snow melts up there I want to round up some people to go up to IC a bunch of times and explore all over the area to help prepare myself for the types of terrain that we will encounter during the race.

Sounds good man! I just feel like this is something that I might be able to do competitvely (at least at a local level) in the long run, so I want to try and find out. Riding dirtbikes is the only thing that I have ever been able to learn to do well enough to compete besides playing paintball (which is where my name came from) so I want to run with it while I am still young enough to heal up from injuries relatively quickly. It is a personl goal that I have wanted to fulfill ever since I was a little kid.

the reason why its so bad is because everyone thanks its like every other dessert race out there.. go as fast as you can and beat everyone. but i belive you will find that if you ride that race at a normal riding speed instead of race speed and have fun with it you will finish and enjoy the ride.. everyone and there brother go to that race so there is no point in trying to pin it the whole way.

That was exactly what I was planning on doing. I know that I can ride my bike through some really gnarly terrain at MY pace, so that is exactly what I am going to do. I may not be too good at the moto stuff, but I can ride really well in the technical crap. I dont care where or if I finish, I just plan on riding the terrain at a pace that I am comfortable with that also doesnt eat up a ton of my energy and just see where I end up at the end of it all. I am looking at it as a fun learning experience rather than one that I MUST perform well in.

I was planning on riding this weekend but my new SG12 boots and turbine core II spark arrestor didnt arrive today so I guess I am going to go snowboarding instead this weekend since the bike is not quite back together waiting for the new parts it is getting soon. Hopefully my stuff will be here on Monday or Tuesday and I will be good to go. I also spaced it this week and forgot to go get my off road stickers for my dirty bikes. I will be ready to ride next weekend for sure!

Yeah, I ended up paying $475 for them but only $100 of it came out of my pocket for them. My parents paid for the rest as a birthday gift so its not too bad of a deal I guess. I tried a pair of them on at carls one day and just had to have a pair of them. They seemed to be WAY more comfortable and protective than my worn out Astar tech 8's.

I was torn between the Gaerne SG-12's and the Sidi Crossfires but I couldnt find any place in town to try on the Sidi boots so I went with the Sg-12's. I really wanted the added protection of the dual hinged ankles that both boots offer. My Tech 8's were great boots for many years, but after a while they got too soft causing me to tweak my ankles up more than a few times which I dont like at all. These boots seem to be very stiff laterally to protect my ankles. I am excited to get them and get to try them out.
