I Ride: R6

Well I just got off the phone with Jason.

The piston got sideways in the motor and trashed it. He said it was not from me riding it hard it was from the previous owner putting way too many hours on the piston.

It bend all the intake and exhaust valves. I need a new head, cylinder, piston, & rod so far. They are going to check out the bottom end.

I'm considering parting it out or selling it as is... Anyone with an 03-05 YZ250F would get a lot of great aftermarket goodies for only $1300 that way.

I can't believe the guy that sold it to me is claiming the bike was fine and me riding it hard for less than 2 hours is what caused it. Like Jason said, if it was from hard riding it would have ceased up not tweaked the piston. The piston had been slapping around in there for too long.

Sorry to hear about the grenade motor. That really blows.

Sorry to hear that Ryan, that really sucks. You could probably get alot more out of it by parting it out than selling it complete like it is. You will probably spend close to that $1300 on parts and labor just to get it running again.

Also a thing to think about is this bike will have quite a few parts that will be interchangeable with the YZ125 like the wheels which are worth a ton of money themselves. Before I started building my own wheels I had East Coast Wheels build me a talon/excel/buchanon (sp?) rear wheel that ended up costing right at $600.

Dave, LOL!

Thanks Liteone.

As for parting out the only reason I am thinking about not doing it is because of how long it might take. I'd rather have $1000 in a week than $1300 in a month ya know? As for parts I could use on the 125... Yeah I'm thinking about that too! Haha

Alright, I put it up on CL
Considering the mods I think it's still worth $1300 to someone. I googled a new top end and was finding them for about $500 used. So someone could have a great bike for about $2k & I won't lose too much money on the deal.

The prices listed after the part isn't what I'm asking for it. That's how much they are new. I'm only asking $1300 for everything.

high performance 4 stroke engines are a hand grenade, the dealer pulls the pin on the way out of the showroom, its just a matter of time. Maintenance whores and super expensive to repair when you wait just a little too long to work on them. So sorry about your bike man, that really does suck

I would not say that a 125 would be any more or less prone to engine failure after lots of run time than a 250f, but it is for damn sure a hell of a lot cheaper to rebuild or fix if it does go boom. IMO a 2 stroke is worth having around just for the smell of burnt klotz in the morning. lol yummy

Well there is some good news.

I don't think the head needs to be replaced. It had some damage but I polished it up & I think it's good! So really I think it just needs valves (springs are good), piston, rings, cylinder repaired or replaced, & maybe a new rod & bearings.

I'm still selling it though.

it's hard to tell if the head is still good even if its clean unless you have the new valves, and if they sit right. even that is sketchy, until you put it all back together and find out it dont fit right. Still it could be a good parts bike, given the gud stuff it's got. but 1300 + the cost of a possible new head and bottom end seems to outweigh the cost of the bike itself. just sayin, you might get more of your mula parting it out. i might know someone who could be interested on your exhaust.

Yeah I'm considering parting it but I'm getting people wanting to see it as is for $1300. But more exciting is the new pics I have of the piston!!
The pin had to be hammered out to where it is sitting now & yes that's one of the rings you see.

Holy carnage! That looks like an OEM piston to me. I am willing to bet this thing has never been rebuilt.

At least we can see it was running plenty rich. lol

I agree... I don't think the previous owner did much more than change the oil.
