I Ride: 2006 R6S, 2003 YZ250

So... how screwed am I?

Alright, here the list of my problems. I just recently bought a YZ250 here in idaho. I've had quite a few dirt bikes in my life and i don't think i've ever had a title for any of them. It just wasn't anything you ever needed in Wyoming but i guess now that i think about it, that was kinda crazy since you wouldn't be able to tell if it was stolen or not... But anyways, i have a certificate of origin for the bike i bought, the problem is I'm the 4th owner of the bike and it hasn't been notarized between any of the sales other than the first one. How is this going to effect me getting an offroad vehicle sticker? Also, the second of my problems... it has an FMF titanium 2 silencer that doesn't say FS approved etc.... I can see screen around the inside obviously but the hole does appear to go all the way through so i don't believe it is going to be approved for use in idaho. Am i going to have to throw out another $150 for one that says approved? Let me know what yall think.

Have to look at it

So who are ya and where do you work?

I am the 391st assistant Weapons Section Chief, but also one of the MSF instructors on base. If you need any bike help, I work on all sorts of bikes and have been changing a bunch of tires of late. I live in town, but am on base every day.

One of my TSgt's recently had to apply for a title on a older dirt bike he bought. Pretty easy and not expensive. Do you know where the DMV is in Mtn. Home?

Ah cool, i work over in AMMO. Will i be able to apply for a title with a certificate of origin that hasn't been notarized? If so that would make the process easier for sure haha. The expensive part is going to be the spark arrestor problem, those aren't cheap. Maybe i can just JB weld some mesh into the end of the silencer and maybe they wouldn't say anything. The Sheriff that stopped by the track today couldn't tell if it had an arrestor or not either, he seen the mesh on the inside walls of the silencer but the outside wasn't stamped SA approved or whatever. Lucky he didn't cite me at all, just told me to pack it up and get a sticker next time since i'm barely over the 30 day grace period.

AMMO.......well Sh!t.....there isn't room for two of us on this site. I'm OUT!

Just kidding, welcome. Do you know Eric Solasobal? I can't remember how to spell his last name. He's either still a Staff or now a Tech in Ammo. Good dude to know. You ever gonna bring your dirty bike to Boise area for a ride? Let us know, we have a lot of fun places to show you.

Track is OK

If you are on a "Closed course" like a track, you dont need a sticker or sparky.
But if you are on public land or BLM land, you will then need both.

As for the title work, again, go see the DMV in Mountain Home, by the court house.

$300 fine for not having it. I'm pretty certain you can get a sparky for less then that.

Well they sell inserts only, but none that are made specifically for my silencer, i'm wondering if any of them would be the same diameter to fit in the tip of mine. Maybe Yamaha has one to look at.

What?

Duck, you can get a fine for not having a spark arrestor at a closed track?

When did that change?!

No. The beefy fine is issued by the Forrest Service or County Sherriffs. On a closed course/private land you are welcome to duct tape a Briggs & Stratton into a wheel barrow and ride it if you want.

Awesome update.... So somehow i have to contact all previous owners and get releases of interest signed by all of them. Including the guy who bought it in colorado from the dealer (not likely). And if i can't manage to get those i have to go through a bonded title package which involves sending cert leters to their old addresses in hopes they come back to me unopened lol. What a pain in the ass. Maybe i'll just go sell it in wyoming where they don't give a ###t if your bike is titled or not. Anyone want a good track bike w/o title?

^^ posted on correct thread this time.

That really sucks to hear about the title issues. I wouldnt have any clue what to do on that.

As for the spark arrestor you have to buy a whole new muffler. Nobody makes an insert for the 2 stroke exhausts. Pro moto billet makes these inserts but they are only 4 stroke things since you cant use a screen type sparky on a smoker. Your options for regular performance spark arrestors are pretty much limited to the Pro Circuit "Nature friendly" s/a muffler, and the FMF Turbine core II s/a muffler. Either one can be bout for like $135 new. I like the FMF one best and have one on both my 250 and my 500.

pretty much, the build up would be so bad and quick...

As for selling, put it up on craigslist and see what kind of bites you get. Best of luck, sounds like a pain, but it can be done to get title.

Yup, thats the problem. Most 2 stroke spark arrestor systems use a spiral type thing that spins the air on the way out. I believe the style is called a krizzmann bullet.

But on a positive note the PMB inserts for 4 strokes pretty much cost the same as a whole new 2 stroke muffler. You gotta love the cheapness of smoker parts.

Positive note! I have contacted each person on the certificate of origin, thank you facebook. Now if the guy who sold it to me would start cooperating then i'll be set! Maybe a call from the investigator will put a fire under his ass. Pay your taxes people! :P
