I put a set of the new Dunlop MX51's on my sons YZ80 a few months back. They hook up really well in medium to soft pack.

Kumho. Because the name makes me laugh. Aside from that, favorite tire depends entirely on what type of dirt/sand/rocks you are riding on. I prefer a stiffer tire for general use, but then, I have a habit of steering with the rear, flat track style more then I should... unless we are talking Motard, in which case it works out just fine. |

Boost........any more suggestions on what I might be looking into for a front dirt tire? I like to ride Hemmingway......and Blacks Creek.......and Fairfield. How's that for a variety.

For rear tires right now the Dunlop MX51 is my favorite because of how well they work when leaned over. The strait line grip is just OK IMO but I will give up some strait line grip for help in the corners when I am working the edge knobs. Dunlop 756's grip great but wear quick and are hard to find. The Dunlop 952 seems to work pretty well in most situations and lasts pretty long. For front tires I dont really have a favorite yet. I like the Bridgestone M59 everywhere but hard surfaces especially if they have a light layer of sand on top of it as they skate easy in that situation. They work really well in soft to intermediate/mid hard surfaces. I also like the Dunlop 756 and the 756RR front but they are getting hard to find since they got discontinued. They work in a very similar manner as the M59, good everywhere but on the hard stuff. I really hate the MX51 front. It works good in its perfect moist intermediate dirt and does ok on hard pack but is terrible at transitioning over to the soft stuff. I have heard good things about the Pirelli scorpion MXMS 32 front grip wise but like the MX51 and 31 fronts they will chunk knobs off in rocky terrain. I am getting ready to order some new tires for the YZ this week and I am going to try the Bridgestone M403 front and the M404 rear this time around. I have heard that they work well most every where and are very consistent feeling at all times. It is really tough to pick a perfect tire for around here since we pretty much can see all terrain types in a single ride in many riding areas and/or tracks. These days I tend to lean towards intermediate terrain tires that do as good of job as possible when it comes to how wide of a veriety of terrain the tire will work decent in on both the soft-int side and the int-hard side. Hopefully these Bridgestone M403/404's will do just that. I find that as I continue to get better and faster on my bike I tend to find the tires to be the most difficut thing on the bike to get ironed out because I am now riding on the limit of traction most of the time when I am pushing hard. Man what a luxury it would be to have like 10 sets of wheels all ready to go with different tire set ups on all of them... |
