Heads Up Ya'll!!!

Hope this isn't news, and if it's a repost apologies but you should be aware:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 01, 2010

07-01-10 Boise PD to Assist Boise County in Traffic Safety Patrols

Keeping summer travelers on Idaho's backcountry highways is the goal behind a new, cooperative traffic safety patrol!

Special enforcement starts today!

Boise, July 1, 2010 – Beginning today and running throughout the summer, Boise Police motors officers will join deputies with the Boise County Sheriff’s Office in increasing patrols targeting aggressive or impaired driving on Boise County highways.

Keeping summer travelers safe is the goal behind the extra traffic enforcement. Officers and deputies are specifically concerned about aggressive driving by motorcycle riders, a problem Boise County deputies and residents tell Boise Police is increasing.

“Boise County deputies came to us and said this is a traffic safety problem that they’re very concerned about, especially as summer travel starts to pick up,” said Sgt. Kyle Christensen of the Boise Police Motors Unit.

“The summer brings more motorcycle riders in Boise County. The deputies are concerned about speeding, drunk driving and other behaviors that could put all summer travelers at risk. BPD does a lot of special patrols focusing on highway safety, so they asked us to help and we said, sure. We know a lot of travelers using those mountain highways come from Boise. If we can help keep them safe, we will”

Boise City’s assistance in Boise County is being paid for by a grant from the Idaho Transportation Department’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety.

The Boise City patrols in Boise County will not take away any officers regularly scheduled to be on patrol on Boise City streets. The BPD officers assisting in Boise County will be working extra, overtime hours paid for by the state traffic safety grant money, similar to other ITD supported special traffic patrols targeting seat belts and aggressive driving.

“In the summer, many new riders are hitting the street and most have no training”, said Cecilia Arritola, motorcycle safety coordinator with ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety.

“Riding a motorcycle requires balance, judgment and quick reactions. Alcohol slows or dulls these skills in riders,” Arritola said. “Mix in aggressive riding behaviors such as; speeding, tailgating, and weaving in and out of traffic, and you’re going to crash.”

In 2009, 24 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes involved impaired motorcyclists. Statistically, 52 percent of the fatalities were single vehicle accidents with no other cars involved. This percentage has increased significantly the last two years.

In all seriousness, my boss and I are working on a little something there. It's top secret for now though.

You know they are just looking for money. They're using the alcohol as a reason to convince the bosses to let them spend a ton of money where there isn't going to be many targets.

I Ride: with dubious judgement, but niceness

Well, looks like I'll be making the major effort to only ride the Lowman Loop (and on to Stanley and back) during the week. I just checked with a friend of mine who works for Ada County and he says 95% of the offered assistence will be on the weekends, and the major focus will be between IC and Boise.
No more passing the slow-a## campers on the double yellow....damn!

As long as they stay between IC and Boise, idc. That sections always been a crapshoot.
IC --> Gv is the only entertaining part anyway, and I doubt that area has the traffic to warrant regular patrol.
Like you said, mainly Boise --> IC, and probably Hwy55/HSB.

As for passing on double yellows, I believe that is one of the main things that really p*sses cagers off, whether it is safe or not. They complain about it to the :cop:, and complaints equal further enforcement/restrictions.
Just saying...

That's because a bunch of them live out there along with lots of Correctional Officers from the prisons. Same where I live, a mile away from you.

Go Ahead and come down here, Mt. Home to Gooding is not a bad ride but it is nothing like Lowman. Gooding also has a Dairy Queen and is a good stop to take a break. Fairfeild has a little place to eat too and that is where Soldier Mountain is. I wouldn't mind a trip to Craters of the Moon it is about 200 miles from Boise lots of straights however.

Yea mt. Home isn't too bad. It's definatly not the loman loop but there are some pretty good rides around here. Hammet has some nice curves, 100mph curves and then some roads that is fun to try and hit Tue rev limiter. Lol. We also have some mountain roads here and there. Like Steven said, let's yet somebody to sponsor a track for us. If they want safety, the track would be the best way for them to keep us under control.

Agreed. If only we had the money to make a commercial that was so good and so convincing that the city diverted money from LEO funding and towards a track. I would sign a binding agreement to never speed in the state of Idaho if there were a track for us to use instead.....and if I did, the punishment would be death by firing squad. I mean it, if there were a track, I wouldn't speed on the street anymore. Hell, maybe I'd sell Katy and buy a track bike.

Exactly! Why would i want to speed and have to worry about Leo's, gravel and cagers if we had a track. I would just commute with my bike.. Need somebody with connections to get the word out!!

I'm all for a local track, but I don't think the "give me a track and I'll stop breaking the law" argument will work.
